An implant-supported crown is a replacement tooth attached to a dental implant placed in the jawbone. It is designed to look and function much like a natural tooth and does not require reshaping the teeth on either side, as a bridge would. The crown is the visible final stage of implant treatment, following the placement and healing of the implant itself.
If you are a Windham Centre resident missing one tooth, our Port Dover dentists can explain whether an implant crown is suitable for you, what each stage involves and how the crown is designed to match the colour and shape of your smile as well as the way you bite.

Is it suitable
An implant needs enough healthy bone and stable gums around it. The dentist reviews X-rays or 3D images, your medical history and habits such as smoking or grinding. Conditions like poorly controlled diabetes can affect healing. If the bone is thin, grafting may be discussed as a first step. The dentist will explain the factors that are most likely to influence your outcome.
A bridge or a removable partial denture can also replace a single tooth. Bridges involve crowning the neighbouring teeth, while partials come in and out of the mouth. Implants avoid altering adjacent teeth but require surgery and more time overall. The dentist will compare the options, their costs and their upkeep so you can make an informed choice.
Designing the crown
Once the implant has healed, impressions or digital scans record its exact position along with the surrounding teeth. The crown’s shade, shape and size are chosen to match your smile. For front teeth, the dentist pays close attention to the gumline so the result looks as natural as possible. Share any preferences or concerns about appearance during this planning stage.
An abutment connects the implant to the crown. It may be a stock part or custom-made, and in some designs the crown is screwed directly onto the implant. The dentist will explain the approach chosen and why. Screw-retained crowns can be removed for maintenance if needed, while cemented crowns may look slightly different at the margins near the gum.
Fitting
At the fitting appointment, the healing cap is removed and the abutment and crown are tried in. The dentist checks how the crown sits against the gum, how it contacts the neighbouring teeth and how it looks. You can look in a mirror and share your impressions before anything is finalised. Small adjustments may be made at this point to improve fit or appearance.
The crown is then screwed or cemented into place and the bite is checked carefully. Implant crowns are usually adjusted to avoid heavy contact, because implants lack the natural cushioning ligament that surrounds a real tooth root. Report any discomfort, high spots or unusual pressure in the days after fitting so the dentist can refine the bite promptly.
Looking after it
Brush twice daily and clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser every day. The gum around an implant can become inflamed if plaque is allowed to build up. Your hygienist may recommend specific tools and show you how to reach the area where the crown meets the gum, which is the spot that most needs attention.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the crown, check your bite and monitor the health of the gum and bone around the implant. X-rays may be taken periodically to confirm that bone levels remain stable. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect the crown. Report any looseness, bleeding or discomfort promptly rather than waiting.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss an implant crown. Windham Centre patients who already have an implant placed elsewhere can mention it, so the team can review the records and plan the restoration stage.
Bring any X-rays, implant details or treatment plans from previous providers to the consultation so nothing needs to be repeated.

The crown is placed after the implant has bonded with the bone, which often takes a few months. The crown stage itself usually involves one or two appointments once healing is complete and the dentist is satisfied with the implant.
Implant crowns are designed to match the shade and shape of your natural teeth. The dentist considers the gumline and the teeth on either side to help achieve a natural appearance, especially for teeth that show when you smile.
The crown cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if the area is not cleaned well. Daily care and regular checkups are important for keeping the implant healthy over the long term.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown or abutment screw can often be tightened or repaired fairly simply. Avoid chewing on that side until it has been checked, as continued use may cause further damage.
Many last for years. The crown may eventually need replacing because of wear or damage, while the implant underneath can often remain in place with good care. Regular reviews help spot problems before they become serious.
Implants can replace missing teeth with a fixed root in the jaw. Windham Centre patients can explore suitability, stages and upkeep with our Port Dover team.
