An implant-supported crown is the replacement tooth attached to a dental implant. Once the implant has integrated with the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is placed and the crown is fixed on top. The result is a stand-alone tooth that does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, unlike a traditional bridge.
Walsh patients who have an implant, or are planning one, can have the crown designed and fitted at our Port Dover office. The dentist will discuss shade, shape and how the crown will be attached, and explain how to keep the implant and surrounding gums healthy for the long term.

Before the crown
Before a crown is placed, the dentist checks that the implant has fully bonded with the bone. This healing period often takes several months and should not be rushed. X-rays and a stability check help confirm readiness. If your implant was placed by another provider, bring their records so the exact components can be identified and matched correctly.
A healing cap or temporary crown may be used for a time to shape the gum tissue around the implant, so the final crown looks natural where it meets the gum. This step can be particularly important for front teeth, where the appearance of the gumline matters most when you smile, talk or laugh in photographs.
Design
Implant crowns can be screwed onto the abutment or cemented in place. Screw-retained crowns can be removed by the dentist for maintenance or repair, while cemented crowns may offer certain aesthetic advantages in some positions. The dentist will explain which approach suits the angle of your implant, its location in the mouth and your bite.
Zirconia, porcelain and other ceramics are commonly used for implant crowns. The shade is matched carefully to neighbouring teeth, and the shape is designed to fit your bite and smile line. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth, do it before the crown shade is chosen, since the crown will not change colour afterwards.
Fitting
Impressions or digital scans record the implant’s position and the surrounding teeth precisely. These are sent to a dental lab where the crown is made. Ask how long fabrication usually takes, so you can plan your next visit from Walsh around work and family. A temporary may be worn in the meantime in some cases, particularly for front teeth.
At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks the crown’s fit, its contacts with neighbouring teeth and your bite before securing it. Small adjustments may be made so it does not take more than its share of chewing force. You can review the appearance and comfort in a mirror before the appointment ends and raise any concerns.
Long-term care
Brush twice daily and clean around the implant with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser as advised by the hygienist. Gum inflammation around implants, if left unchecked, can lead to bone loss. Avoid smoking and chewing very hard objects such as ice, and wear a night guard if you grind, since implants do not cushion force the way natural teeth do.
Regular checkups allow the dentist to inspect the crown, gums and bite and take X-rays when needed to monitor bone levels. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gums bleed or you notice swelling or discomfort around the implant. A loose screw is usually a simple fix if it is caught early and checked.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to discuss your implant and the next steps toward a crown. If your implant was placed elsewhere, let us know so we can request any records that are needed.
Bring details of your implant system or surgeon if available, along with any recent X-rays of the implant area you may have.

Usually after the implant has integrated with the bone, which often takes a few months. The timing depends on healing and bone quality in your case. The dentist will confirm when the implant is stable and ready for a crown.
Careful shade matching and gum shaping help it blend with neighbouring teeth. Front-tooth implants may need extra steps, such as a temporary crown to shape the gum, to achieve a natural-looking gum line around the crown.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gums and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily cleaning around the implant and regular checkups are essential to keep it healthy over the long term.
Contact the office promptly. A loose screw or crown can often be tightened or recemented fairly simply, but it should be checked to rule out problems with the implant or the bone around it before it gets worse.
With good care, implant crowns can serve for many years. Like any crown, they may eventually need replacement because of wear or damage, while the implant underneath often remains in place and can support a new crown.
