The tooth on top of the implant

The crown is the part of an implant everyone sees, so it is designed with care.

Once a dental implant has healed and bonded with the jawbone, it needs a crown to function as a tooth. An implant-supported crown attaches to the implant through a connector called an abutment. It is shaped and shaded to match neighbouring teeth and designed to handle biting forces while keeping the surrounding gum healthy and easy to clean.

Patients from Vittoria who have an implant in place, or are planning one, can talk with the dentist at our Port Dover office about the crown stage. You will learn how the crown is designed, what materials might be used, how many visits are involved and what daily care helps the implant and crown last.

Before the crown

The implant must be stable before a permanent crown is placed.

Confirming the implant has healed

After implant placement, the bone needs time to integrate with the implant surface, often several months. The dentist will check stability and may take X-rays to confirm healing. Rushing this stage can risk the implant’s success, so timing is guided by clinical findings rather than a fixed calendar date. Ask how healing is assessed in your case.

Shaping the gum

In some cases, a healing cap or temporary crown is used to guide the gum into a natural shape around the implant. This helps the final crown emerge from the gum like a natural tooth, which is particularly important for front teeth. The dentist will explain whether this step is needed for your situation. Gum shaping takes patience.

Design choices

Several decisions affect how the crown looks and how it can be maintained.

Crown materials

Implant crowns are commonly made from zirconia, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal. The choice depends on location, bite forces, appearance and space available. Front teeth often prioritize a natural look, while back teeth may need extra strength. The dentist will explain the trade-offs and recommend a material based on your mouth. Ask how each one wears.

Screw-retained or cemented

Crowns may be screwed to the implant or cemented onto an abutment. Screw-retained crowns can be removed more easily for maintenance, while cemented crowns may offer certain aesthetic advantages. Each approach has considerations for cleaning and repair. Ask the dentist which method is planned and why it suits your implant. Future repairs may depend on this choice.

Fitting

Accurate records help the crown fit precisely.

  1. Impressions and shade matching

An impression or digital scan captures the position of the implant and surrounding teeth. Shade is matched to neighbouring teeth, sometimes with photographs. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do so before the crown is made, since crown colour cannot be changed afterward. These records are sent to a laboratory to create the crown.

  2. Placing the final crown

At the fitting visit, the crown is tried in and checked for fit, contact with neighbouring teeth, appearance and bite. Adjustments are made as needed before the crown is secured. The dentist will check that you can clean around it easily. Mention anything that feels unusual, such as pressure or food catching. Small tweaks are common.

Caring for it

Implant crowns need the same daily care as natural teeth, plus a little extra.

  • Daily cleaning

Brush around the crown twice daily and clean between teeth with floss, interdental brushes or other tools recommended by the hygienist. Pay attention to the gumline, where plaque can cause inflammation around the implant. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may protect the crown and implant from excessive force. Ask which brushes fit best.

  • Checkups and warning signs

Regular checkups allow the team to examine the gum around the implant, check the crown for wear and take X-rays when appropriate. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells, or your bite feels different. Early attention helps prevent small problems from affecting the implant. Do not ignore mild bleeding.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long after implant placement can I get the crown?

It depends on how the implant heals and the quality of the bone. Many implants need several months before a permanent crown is placed. The dentist will assess stability and explain the timing that suits your case.

Will the implant crown look like my natural teeth?

Crowns are shaded and shaped to blend with neighbouring teeth. Front teeth may need extra attention to gum shaping and material choice. Previewing shade and discussing your expectations helps achieve a natural-looking result. Bring photos if they help.

Can an implant crown get cavities?

The crown itself cannot decay, but gum inflammation around implants can occur and lead to bone loss if untreated. Careful cleaning at the gumline and regular checkups are important for long-term implant health. Neighbouring teeth can still decay.

What if my implant crown becomes loose?

Contact the office promptly. A loose crown may be caused by a loose screw or a failing cement seal. Early assessment allows the dentist to fix the problem before it affects the implant or surrounding tissue.

Can an implant crown be replaced if it wears out?

Yes. Crowns can be replaced if they chip, wear or no longer match, usually without disturbing the implant itself. The dentist will assess the implant and gum health before recommending a replacement. New records may be needed.
