An implant-supported crown is the custom tooth attached to a dental implant once the implant has bonded with the jawbone. It is designed to match the shape, size and shade of your neighbouring teeth and to meet your opposing teeth correctly when you bite. Unlike a natural tooth, it has no nerve, so problems may not cause the usual warning pain.
For patients in Vanessa who already have an implant healing, or are planning one, our Port Dover office can explain how the crown stage works. The crown is usually the final step in a longer process, and understanding it helps you plan the last few appointments and the care that keeps it healthy.

When it is placed
After an implant is placed, it typically needs several months to integrate with the bone. The dentist checks stability, sometimes with X-rays, before moving to the crown stage. Rushing this step can put the implant at risk. The timeline depends on bone quality, location in the mouth and whether grafting was needed, so ask for an estimate.
In some cases, a temporary crown or a removable replacement can be worn during healing, particularly for front teeth where appearance matters. These temporary options are not designed for heavy chewing. The dentist will explain what is suitable in your situation and how to protect the implant while you wait for the final crown to be made.
Designing the crown
Impressions or a digital scan record the position of the implant and surrounding teeth. The shade is matched to your neighbouring teeth, and the shape is designed to look natural and allow comfortable cleaning around the gumline. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth, do so before the crown shade is chosen, since crowns do not whiten.
Implant crowns are either screwed into the implant or cemented onto an abutment. Screw-retained crowns can be removed for maintenance if needed, while cemented crowns may offer certain aesthetic advantages. The dentist will choose the approach that best suits the implant’s position, your bite and long-term maintenance, and will explain the reasoning to you in plain terms.
Fitting
The dentist attaches the abutment, the connector between implant and crown, if it is not already in place. The crown is tried in to check fit at the gumline, contact with neighbouring teeth and appearance. You can look in the mirror and share any concerns before it is secured. Minor adjustments are common at this stage.
Your bite is checked carefully, because implants do not have the slight cushioning of natural teeth. A crown that hits too hard can overload the implant over time. Once everything is right, the crown is secured with a screw or cement. Any access hole for a screw is sealed with tooth-coloured material so it blends in.
Caring for it
Brush twice a day and clean around the implant crown daily with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Plaque around implants can cause inflammation of the gum and, over time, bone loss called peri-implantitis. The hygienist can show you techniques and tools that work well for your implant and the shape of the crown.
Attend regular checkups and cleanings, where the dentist checks the crown, gum and bone level. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can help protect the crown. Call the office if the crown feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells, or your bite feels different, since these can be early signs of a problem.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to schedule the crown stage once your implant has healed. Ask how many visits will be needed and how long the crown will take to make, so you can plan your trips.
If you had your implant placed elsewhere, bring any records or information about the implant system so the dentist can plan the crown.

Many implant crowns last for many years with good care, though they may eventually need replacing due to wear or chipping. The implant itself can often remain in place when the crown is replaced. Regular checkups help monitor both.
Many people find that implant crowns feel and function much like natural teeth once they are used to them. Because there is no nerve, it will not feel hot or cold, but you should still be able to chew comfortably.
The crown cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Careful daily cleaning and regular professional cleanings help prevent these problems, and the dentist checks the gum and bone around the implant at each visit.
Call the office. A loose crown may mean a screw has loosened or cement has failed, which can often be fixed. It can also signal a problem with the implant, so it should be checked promptly.
No. Crowns do not respond to whitening products. If you want whiter natural teeth, whiten them before the crown shade is chosen so it can be matched to the brighter shade. Otherwise the crown may look darker afterward.
An implant replaces a missing tooth root with a post that supports a crown. Vanessa patients can learn about suitability, healing time and long-term care.
A crown covers and strengthens a damaged tooth. Vanessa patients can learn when crowns are recommended, what the two visits involve and how to make one last.
