Once a dental implant has bonded with the jawbone, it needs a crown to function like a tooth. The crown attaches to the implant through a connector called an abutment and is designed to match neighbouring teeth in shape and colour. The fit, bite and gum contour all affect how natural it looks and how well it lasts.
If you already have an implant healing, or are planning one, Turkey Point patients can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. Mention where and when your implant was placed if treatment began elsewhere.

Before the crown
Implants usually need a period of healing before a permanent crown is attached. The dentist checks stability and may take X-rays to confirm bone has integrated around the implant. If the gum has been shaped with a healing cap or temporary crown, the tissue is assessed to see whether it is ready for the final restoration.
If your implant was placed by a surgeon or another dentist, the crown dentist will need details such as the implant system and size. Bring any records or cards provided at placement. Coordinating information between providers helps avoid delays and makes sure compatible parts are used for your restoration.
Designing the crown
The dentist selects a shade and shape to blend with your surrounding teeth. Ceramic materials are often chosen for appearance, especially in visible areas. If you are planning whitening, it is generally best done before the crown shade is chosen. Share any preferences about how the tooth should look.
Implant crowns can be attached with a small screw or cemented onto the abutment. Screw-retained crowns can be removed by the dentist for maintenance, while cemented crowns may offer certain aesthetic advantages. The dentist will explain which approach suits the implant position and why.
Fitting
An impression or scan records the position of the implant and surrounding teeth. Special components may be attached temporarily to transfer the exact position to the laboratory. This step is usually comfortable and takes a short time. A bite record helps ensure the crown meets opposing teeth correctly.
At the fitting visit, the dentist attaches the crown and checks contacts with neighbouring teeth, bite and appearance. Implants do not have the cushioning ligament of natural teeth, so the bite is adjusted carefully to avoid overloading. If anything feels high or uncomfortable, mention it before you leave.
Caring for it
Brush around the implant crown twice daily and clean between it and neighbouring teeth each day. Floss, interdental brushes or water flossers may be recommended. Pay attention to the gum line, as inflammation around implants can lead to bone loss if left untreated. Report bleeding or swelling to the office.
Regular exams and cleanings allow the dentist to check the crown, screw or cement, gum health and bone levels. If you grind your teeth, a night guard can protect the implant crown. Contact the office if the crown feels loose or the bite changes, so it can be checked before damage occurs.

It depends on healing and bone quality. Many implants need several months. The dentist will confirm stability before proceeding with the final crown.
The crown is shade-matched and shaped to blend in. Gum contour and the implant position also affect appearance, which the dentist will discuss.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed. Daily cleaning and regular checkups are still important.
Contact the office. A loose screw or crown can usually be addressed, but it should be checked promptly to protect the implant.
Yes. If an implant crown wears or breaks, it can often be replaced without removing the implant itself.
Implants can replace missing teeth with a fixed, root-like support. Turkey Point patients can learn about candidacy, healing stages and upkeep at our Port Dover office.
