Caring for Townsend patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for TownsendThe final step of an implant
An implant-supported crown is an artificial tooth attached to a dental implant, usually through a connector called an abutment. It replaces a single missing tooth without relying on neighbouring teeth for support. The crown is designed to match the shape and colour of nearby teeth and to fit comfortably within your bite.
If you are from Townsend and have an implant healing, or are considering one, our Port Dover office can explain how the crown stage works. The dentist will discuss shade, shape and material, check the gums around the implant and review the care needed to keep the crown and implant healthy.

Readiness for the crown
After an implant is placed, it needs time to fuse with the surrounding bone. Before moving on to the crown, the dentist checks that the implant is firm and comfortable, often with an X-ray to look at the bone around it. Placing a permanent crown too early could put stress on an implant that has not fully integrated, so this timing is weighed carefully.
Healthy, well-shaped gum tissue around the implant helps the crown look natural and stay easy to clean. The dentist will look at how the gum has healed and how your opposing teeth meet the gap. A heavy bite or a grinding habit may influence the material chosen and whether a night guard is recommended once the crown is in place.
Designing the crown
Impressions or digital scans record the exact position of the implant and the teeth around it. The dentist selects a shade to match your neighbouring teeth, sometimes taking photographs to guide the dental lab. If you have been thinking about whitening, mention it now, because a crown will not change colour later and is best matched to the shade you intend to keep.
Crowns may be made from porcelain, zirconia or other materials, each with differences in strength and appearance. They can be cemented onto the abutment or held with a small screw. The dentist will explain which approach suits your situation and how the choice affects future maintenance, such as how easily the crown could be removed for repair.
Fitting the crown
At the fitting visit, the dentist tries in the crown to check how it sits against the gum, how firmly it touches the teeth on either side and whether the colour blends in natural light. They will also see how it meets the opposing teeth when you bite and slide your jaw. This is the moment to mention anything about the shape or shade that does not look right to you.
Once you are both satisfied, the crown is secured to the abutment and the bite is checked again. Implant crowns can feel a little different from natural teeth, because an implant lacks the cushioning ligament that surrounds a natural root. Most people adapt within days, but contact the office if the crown feels high or uncomfortable when chewing.
Long-term care
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque is left to build up. Brush twice a day, clean around the crown with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, and follow any specific technique the hygienist shows you. Bleeding or puffiness around the implant should be reported rather than ignored.
Regular checkups let the dentist examine the crown, the surrounding gum and the implant itself, with occasional X-rays to compare bone levels over time. If the crown feels loose, chips or your bite seems to change, contact the office promptly. A loose screw or small chip is usually simpler to fix when it is caught early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and let the team know where you are in the implant process. They can arrange the appropriate appointment for assessment, impressions or crown placement.
If your implant was placed at another office, bring any records about the implant system used, along with recent X-rays of the area.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It depends on how quickly the implant bonds with the bone, which often takes several months. The dentist will check stability before going ahead. In some situations a temporary crown can be placed earlier so the gap is not left empty.
The crown is designed to match the colour, shape and size of the teeth beside it. Healthy gum tissue and careful shade selection both influence the result. The dentist will check the appearance with you before the crown is secured in place.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become infected if cleaning is neglected. Daily brushing and cleaning around the crown, plus regular checkups, help keep the supporting tissues healthy over the long term.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown may involve the retaining screw, the cement or the abutment, and early attention can prevent damage to the implant. Avoid chewing on that side until the dentist has had a chance to check it.
With good care, implant crowns can last many years, though they may eventually need replacing because of wear or damage. Grinding, heavy bite forces and how well the area is cleaned all affect how long a particular crown serves.
