One tooth, one implant

A single implant crown is built in careful stages.

An implant-supported crown replaces a single missing tooth with a crown attached to a dental implant in the jawbone. Because it does not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, those teeth are left untouched. The final crown is designed to match the shape and shade of nearby teeth and function like a natural tooth.

Getting there involves planning, a healing period and the crown itself, which can mean several trips over a number of months. Selkirk patients can review that sequence with the dentist at our Port Dover office and ask which stages are done there and whether any may involve referral.

Is it the right option?

An implant crown fits some situations better than others.

When an implant crown makes sense

An implant crown may be considered when a single tooth is missing and the teeth on either side are healthy, so preparing them for a bridge would be a significant trade-off. It may also be suitable when a tooth needs extraction and you want a fixed replacement. The dentist will assess the space, bite and surrounding tissues.

Factors that may affect suitability

Adequate bone, healthy gums and good general health are important. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and some medications can affect healing and long-term success. If bone has been lost, grafting may be discussed. The dentist will explain how your health and the condition of the site influence the outlook.

Planning

Planning considers both function and appearance.

Imaging and site assessment

X-rays and sometimes 3D imaging help the dentist assess bone volume, nearby nerves and sinuses. The position of the implant is planned to support the crown in the right place. If the tooth was recently removed or is still present, the dentist will explain when the implant can be placed and how long healing may take.

Designing the crown

The crown’s shape and shade are planned to blend with your other teeth, which is especially important for front teeth. Gum contours around the implant also affect appearance. Ask the dentist how the final crown is expected to look and whether a temporary tooth can be provided during healing.

Treatment stages

Each stage builds on the last.

  1. Implant placement and healing

The implant is placed into the bone under local anaesthetic. Healing and integration usually take several months, during which bone grows around the implant. You will receive aftercare instructions to support healing. Some soreness and swelling are normal in the first few days. Follow-up visits check progress during this period.

  2. Abutment and crown

Once integrated, an abutment is attached to connect the implant to the crown. Impressions or scans are taken, and the crown is made. At the fitting appointment, the dentist checks fit, bite and appearance before securing it. Let the dentist know if anything feels uneven or uncomfortable so adjustments can be made.

Long-term care

An implant crown needs consistent care.

  • Cleaning around the implant

Brush twice daily and clean around the implant using floss, interdental brushes or other tools recommended by the hygienist. Plaque around implants can cause inflammation and bone loss known as peri-implantitis. Ask the hygienist to show you how to clean the area thoroughly, especially where the crown meets the gum.

  • Monitoring at checkups

Attend regular checkups and cleanings so the implant, crown and surrounding gum and bone can be monitored. Report any bleeding, swelling, looseness or changes in bite promptly. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may help protect the crown. Long-term success depends on both professional and home care.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does an implant crown take?

The full process often takes several months, mainly because the implant needs time to integrate with the bone before a crown is attached. Grafting or a recent extraction may add time. The dentist will outline a realistic timeline after assessing the site.

Will the implant crown look natural?

The crown is designed to match neighbouring teeth in shape and shade, and the contour of the gum around it also affects the look. Discuss your expectations during planning, particularly for a front tooth where appearance matters most to you.

Can an implant crown get a cavity?

The crown material itself does not decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily cleaning around the crown and regular professional checkups are essential for keeping the implant healthy long term.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Neither is better for everyone. An implant leaves neighbouring teeth untouched but needs surgery, adequate bone and healing time. A bridge relies on the adjacent teeth. The dentist will compare both based on your teeth, health and preferences.

What if my implant crown feels loose?

Contact the office promptly rather than waiting for your next checkup. A loose crown or abutment screw can sometimes be tightened or repaired, but looseness can also point to other problems around the implant that need to be assessed.
