Port Dover Family Dentistry
An implant crown is the visible tooth fixed to a healed implant post. Renton patients can learn how it is designed, attached and maintained over time.

Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for RentonThe tooth on top of the implant
An implant-supported crown replaces a single missing tooth. Once a dental implant has bonded with the jawbone, a connector called an abutment is attached, and a custom crown is fixed on top. The result is a replacement tooth that does not rest on the gums or depend on neighbouring teeth for support, and that can be cleaned much like a natural tooth.
For Renton patients who already have an implant healing or who are exploring single-tooth replacement, the crown stage is planned at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain how shade, shape and bite are chosen, how the crown is attached and the care needed to keep the implant and surrounding gum healthy for the long term.

Before the crown
After placement, an implant typically needs a period of healing so the bone can bond with it. The dentist checks stability at follow-up visits and may take X-rays to confirm bone levels look healthy. Moving to the crown stage too early can affect long-term success, so the timeline depends on how your mouth heals rather than on a fixed calendar.
In some cases, a healing cap or temporary crown is used to shape the gum around the implant so the final crown emerges naturally. This is especially important for front teeth, where gum contours affect appearance. The dentist will explain whether this step is needed for your implant and how long it might take before the final crown can be made.
Designing it
Impressions or a digital scan record the implant position, neighbouring teeth and your bite. A shade is selected to match surrounding teeth, and the shape is designed to fit naturally into your smile. If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it before the crown shade is chosen, because crowns do not lighten with whitening products.
Implant crowns can be screw-retained, which allows them to be removed by the dentist if needed, or cemented onto the abutment. Each approach has advantages depending on the location and design. The dentist will explain which is planned for your crown and why. Materials are chosen for strength and appearance based on the tooth being replaced.
Fitting day
The healing cap or temporary is removed, and the abutment and crown are placed. If the crown is screw-retained, the screw access is sealed with tooth-coloured material. The dentist checks how the crown sits against the gum and neighbouring teeth and may take an X-ray to confirm proper seating. Local anaesthetic is not always required for this stage.
Your bite is checked carefully. Implants do not have the slight cushioning that natural teeth have, so the dentist ensures the crown does not take excessive force. Let the dentist know if anything feels high or uneven. You will receive instructions on cleaning around the crown and what to watch for over the following weeks.
Caring for it
Brush twice daily and clean around the crown at the gumline with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, as recommended by the hygienist. Plaque buildup can cause inflammation around the implant, called peri-implant mucositis, which can progress to bone loss if left untreated. Gentle, consistent cleaning is the best protection you can provide at home.
Regular checkups and cleanings let the dentist monitor the crown, gum health and bone levels. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect the crown. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells or you notice discomfort around the implant, rather than waiting for the next visit.
Planning your appointment
Whether your implant was placed at our Port Dover office or elsewhere, phone 519-583-2929 to discuss the crown stage. Share any details you have about the implant so the team can plan accordingly.
If your implant was placed by another provider, bring any records or implant information you received so the team can confirm compatible components.

It depends on healing and bone quality. Some implants are ready for a crown within a few months, while others take longer, especially if bone grafting was needed. The dentist will confirm stability before moving forward with the final crown.
Crowns are designed to match the shade and shape of neighbouring teeth, and gum shaping can help the crown emerge naturally. Results vary depending on bone and gum conditions. Discuss your expectations with the dentist during the planning stage.
The crown itself does not decay, but the gum and bone around it can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily cleaning and regular professional checkups are essential to protect the implant and keep the surrounding tissues healthy.
Contact the office. A loose screw or crown can often be tightened or recemented. Looseness of the implant itself is more serious and needs prompt assessment. Avoid chewing on that side until it has been checked by the dentist.
Implant crowns can last many years with good care, though they may eventually need replacement due to wear or damage. The implant underneath often lasts longer. Regular checkups help identify issues before they become bigger problems.
Implants replace a missing tooth root and support crowns, bridges or dentures. Learn how suitability, healing and maintenance are discussed for Renton patients.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, fracture or a large filling. Renton residents can see how crowns are planned and placed.
