The visible part of an implant

The crown is the finishing step of single-tooth implant treatment.

An implant-supported crown is the tooth-shaped restoration attached to a dental implant once the implant has integrated with the jawbone. It is designed to look and function like a natural tooth. The crown connects to the implant through a small piece called an abutment, and its shape, colour and fit all contribute to how natural the result appears.

Peacock Point patients who have had an implant placed, or are planning one, can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. If your implant was placed elsewhere, bring the records so the restoration can be planned with accurate information about the implant system used.

Before the crown

The implant must be stable before restoration.

  1. Confirming the implant has healed

After placement, the implant needs time to bond with the bone. The dentist checks stability and the health of surrounding gums before moving ahead. X-rays may confirm bone levels. If healing is incomplete, the crown stage may be delayed. Rushing this step can compromise long-term success, so patience pays off.

  2. Gathering implant details

If another dentist or surgeon placed your implant, the restoring dentist needs to know the brand, size and type. Request records and X-rays from the placing provider. Without this information, finding compatible components can be difficult. Clear communication between providers helps the restoration fit properly and last well.

Design choices

Decisions about the crown affect looks and maintenance.

Materials and appearance

Implant crowns are often made of ceramic or zirconia, which can be shade-matched to neighbouring teeth. The dentist considers your bite, the position of the tooth and how visible it is. For front teeth, the shape of the gum around the crown is especially important for a natural look, and temporary crowns may be used to guide it.

Screw-retained or cemented

Some implant crowns are attached with a screw, while others are cemented onto the abutment. Screw-retained crowns can be removed more easily for maintenance, while cemented crowns may offer certain aesthetic advantages. Ask the dentist which method is recommended for your implant and what it means for future care.

Placement

Fitting the crown requires precision.

Impressions and try-in

Impressions or digital scans capture the position of the implant and surrounding teeth. The lab or office uses these to fabricate the crown. You may have a try-in appointment to check colour, shape and fit. This is your chance to comment on appearance before the final crown is attached.

Final attachment

At the final appointment, the dentist attaches the abutment and crown, checks how your teeth meet and adjusts the bite so the implant is not overloaded. Implants do not have the same cushioning as natural teeth, so a balanced bite is important. You will receive instructions on cleaning and caring for the new tooth.

Long-term care

An implant crown needs consistent care.

  • Daily cleaning

Brush around the implant crown twice daily and clean between teeth with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Plaque buildup can cause inflammation around the implant, which may lead to bone loss. Ask the hygienist which tools are best for cleaning your implant and how to use them correctly.

  • Professional monitoring

Regular checkups allow the dentist to examine the gum around the implant, check the crown for wear or looseness and take periodic X-rays. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may protect the crown. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells or your bite changes.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long after implant placement can I get the crown?

It depends on how quickly the implant integrates with the bone, which often takes several weeks to months. The dentist checks stability before proceeding. Some cases allow earlier loading, but this depends on individual factors.

Will the implant crown look like my other teeth?

Implant crowns are shade-matched and shaped to blend with neighbouring teeth. The gum contour around the crown also matters. Discuss appearance at the try-in stage so adjustments can be made before final placement.

Can an implant crown get a cavity?

The crown itself cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Good daily cleaning and regular checkups are essential for long-term success.

What if my implant crown becomes loose?

Contact the office promptly. A loose crown may need its screw tightened or the crown recemented. Avoid chewing on it until it is checked, to prevent damage to the implant or abutment.

Can a different dentist restore my implant?

Yes, if they have the implant details and compatible components. Bring records from the provider who placed the implant, including brand and size, so the restoring dentist can plan the crown.
