An implant-supported crown is the artificial tooth attached to a dental implant once it has bonded with the jawbone. It is designed to match your natural teeth in shape and colour and to work with your bite. While the implant provides the foundation below the gum, the crown is what you see when you smile and what you use when you chew.
Patients from Nixon who have had an implant placed, or are planning one, can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain how the crown is designed, the visits involved and how to care for it so the implant and surrounding gums stay healthy for years.

When it is ready
After implant placement, the bone needs time to bond with the implant before it can carry biting forces. The dentist checks healing with an examination and, often, X-rays. If healing is complete and the gums look healthy, the crown process can start. Rushing this step can put the implant at risk, so the timeline is guided by how your mouth responds.
A small connector called an abutment links the implant to the crown. Depending on the system, it may be attached at this stage or may already be in place. The dentist will explain what is involved and whether freezing is needed. Some patients have a healing cap replaced at this visit, which usually feels like mild pressure rather than pain.
Designing the crown
Impressions or scans record the position of the implant and the surrounding teeth. The shade is selected to blend with neighbouring teeth, and the shape is designed to match your smile. If you are planning whitening, it is usually best to do so first, since crowns do not change colour. Share any preferences about appearance early in the process.
The crown must fit your bite carefully, since implants do not have the natural cushioning that ligaments give real teeth. The dentist checks how the crown meets opposing teeth when you bite and slide your jaw. A well-balanced bite helps protect the implant, the crown and your other teeth from excess force over time and years of use.
Placement
The crown is tried in to check fit, contact with neighbouring teeth, colour and comfort. The dentist may make small adjustments and ask you to bite several times. This is your opportunity to mention anything that looks or feels wrong, since changes are easier to make before the crown is secured. Take a good look in the mirror before agreeing.
Depending on the design, the crown is either cemented onto the abutment or secured with a small screw that is then covered. The dentist will explain which approach is used and why. You will be shown how to clean around the crown and given advice about eating during the first days while you get used to it.
Caring for it
Brush twice daily and clean carefully around the implant crown using floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser as recommended. Plaque around implants can cause inflammation called peri-implant disease, which may lead to bone loss if untreated. Ask the hygienist for a demonstration so you feel confident cleaning the area thoroughly every day at home.
Avoid biting very hard objects, which can chip or loosen the crown. If you grind your teeth, wearing a night guard may help protect the implant and crown. Keep regular checkups so the dentist can check the crown, the gums and the bone around the implant. Report looseness, bleeding or discomfort promptly rather than waiting.
Planning your appointment
Contact our Port Dover office to schedule the crown stage once your implant has healed. Ask how many visits the crown requires so you can plan your trips from Nixon in advance.
If your implant was placed by another provider, bring records about the implant system so the team can plan the crown accurately.
Before you book

It depends on healing. Many implants need several months to bond with the bone before a crown is attached. The dentist will confirm readiness with an examination and X-rays before starting the crown stage, so the implant is not overloaded too early.
The crown is shaded and shaped to blend with your natural teeth. The dentist will check the appearance with you before it is secured. If you plan to whiten, discuss it beforehand, since crowns do not lighten.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gums and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Careful daily cleaning and regular checkups help keep the area healthy and stable. Natural teeth nearby can still decay, so they need the same care.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown may need its screw tightened or the crown recemented, but it can also signal a problem with the implant. Early assessment helps prevent further complications. Avoid chewing on that side until it has been checked.
Crowns can wear, chip or loosen over time and may eventually need replacement, even if the implant remains healthy. Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor both and recommend care when needed, often before you notice a problem yourself.
Implants replace missing teeth with a post placed in the jaw. Nixon residents can learn about suitability, the staged treatment timeline and long-term upkeep.
A crown covers and strengthens a weakened tooth. Nixon patients can learn when crowns are advised, how the two-visit process works and how to keep one lasting.
