Once a dental implant has healed and bonded with the jawbone, an implant-supported crown is attached to it, usually through a connecting piece called an abutment. The crown restores the look and chewing function of a single missing tooth without relying on neighbouring teeth. Its shape, shade and fit are designed to blend with your smile and work comfortably with your bite.
Long Point patients who have an implant in place, or are planning one, can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. Several appointments are usually involved, so plan around your seasonal calendar.

Before the crown
The dentist confirms the implant is stable and the surrounding bone and gum have healed, often with an X-ray. Healing time varies with bone quality, grafting and your health. Rushing this stage can risk the implant’s long-term success, so patience is part of the plan.
In some cases a healing cap or temporary crown is used to shape the gum around the implant so the final crown looks natural where it meets the gum. This is particularly important for front teeth. The dentist will explain whether this step applies to your case.
Designing it
Implant crowns may be screw-retained, allowing removal for maintenance, or cemented onto an abutment. Each approach has advantages depending on the implant position and aesthetics. Ask the dentist which method is recommended for your implant and why.
Crowns are often made of zirconia or porcelain-based materials chosen for strength and appearance. Shade is matched to neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth, do it before the crown is made, since crown colour does not change afterward.
Placement
Impressions or digital scans capture the implant position and surrounding teeth. The laboratory fabricates the crown and abutment. A try-in may be done to check shape and shade before finishing. Share any concerns about appearance at this stage, when changes are easier.
The final crown is attached, and the bite is checked so the implant is not overloaded. Small adjustments are common. If the crown is screw-retained, the access hole is sealed. You will receive instructions on cleaning around the new tooth.
Long-term care
Brush around the crown and gumline twice daily, and clean between teeth with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. Gum inflammation around implants can lead to bone loss if ignored. Ask the hygienist to demonstrate the best technique for your crown.
Keep regular checkups so the crown, implant and gums can be monitored with X-rays when appropriate. Report looseness, bleeding, swelling or changes in bite promptly. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to protect the implant from heavy forces.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange the crown stage once your implant has healed. Ask how many visits are needed and how long laboratory work usually takes.
If your implant was placed elsewhere, bring details of the implant system and any records, as these are needed to plan the crown.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It depends on healing, which often takes several months. The dentist confirms the implant is stable before proceeding. Some cases use a temporary crown earlier, depending on the situation.
Many people find implant crowns feel very similar to natural teeth when chewing. There is no nerve in the implant, so the sensation is slightly different, but most adapt quickly.
The crown itself cannot decay, but the gums and bone around the implant can become inflamed or infected. Daily cleaning and regular checkups are essential for long-term success.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown or screw can often be tightened or repaired. Continuing to chew on it may cause further damage, so have it assessed soon.
Possibly. Bring information about the implant brand and records from the office that placed it. The dentist can review the details and explain whether the crown stage can be completed here.
Implants replace missing teeth with a post placed in the jawbone. Long Point patients can learn about suitability, healing and upkeep at our Port Dover office.
A crown covers a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or a large filling. Long Point patients can learn how crowns are planned, fitted and maintained in Port Dover.
