When a single tooth is missing, an implant can act as a replacement root, and a crown attached on top restores the visible tooth. Unlike a bridge, this approach does not require reshaping the neighbouring teeth. The crown is designed to match the colour and shape of the teeth beside it so that it blends in with your smile and supports a natural bite.
Hillcrest patients who already have an implant, or are planning one, can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. The dentist will explain how the crown is designed and attached, how long the process may take and how to look after it once it is in place.

Before the crown
After an implant is placed, the surrounding bone needs time to bond with it, which often takes a few months. The dentist will check stability, the health of the surrounding gum and X-rays of the bone before moving to the crown stage. If the gum needs shaping to create a natural contour, a healing cap or temporary crown may be used for a period first.
If your implant was placed by a specialist or another office, the dentist may need records about the implant system and components used, since parts are not always interchangeable. Ask for these details to be shared ahead of time. Clear communication between providers helps avoid delays and ensures the crown fits the implant correctly from the start.
Designing it
Impressions or digital scans record the position of the implant and the surrounding teeth. The dentist selects a shade that blends with your natural teeth and designs a shape that suits your bite. For front teeth, the way the gum frames the crown is especially important. If you are planning to whiten your teeth, do so before the crown shade is chosen.
Implant crowns may be attached with a small screw through the crown or cemented onto an abutment. Screw-retained crowns can be removed more easily for maintenance, while cemented crowns may suit certain positions. The dentist will explain which approach they recommend for your situation and why, including any trade-offs for appearance, future repairs and routine care.
Fitting
At the fitting appointment, the dentist attaches the abutment if needed and seats the crown. They check how it contacts neighbouring teeth, whether floss can pass between them and how the gum responds. X-rays may be taken to confirm that all components are seated properly. Little or no anaesthetic is usually needed, since the implant has no nerve.
Implants do not have the same cushioning as natural teeth, so the bite is checked carefully to avoid overloading the crown. The dentist may make small adjustments. If the bite feels high or uneven once you are home, contact the office rather than waiting. Small changes made early can protect both the crown and the implant underneath.
Caring for it
Plaque can still build up around an implant and inflame the gum and bone, a condition known as peri-implantitis. Brush twice daily and clean around the crown with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser, as the hygienist recommends. Regular professional cleanings help remove deposits from areas that are difficult to reach at home, even with careful daily cleaning.
Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gum bleeds or swells, or you notice a bad taste around the implant. A loose screw can sometimes be tightened before it causes damage. At routine visits, the dentist checks the crown, bite and gum health and may take X-rays periodically to monitor bone levels around the implant.
Planning your appointment
When you call from Hillcrest, let the team know where and when your implant was placed and share any records you have. The dentist can then plan the crown stage and explain the appointments you can expect.
Ask how long each visit is likely to take and whether a temporary tooth will be in place while the final crown is being made.

Implant crowns can last many years, although they may eventually need replacing due to wear or damage. The implant itself often lasts longer. Good hygiene, regular checkups and protecting the crown from heavy grinding all help extend its life.
The dentist matches the shade and shape to nearby teeth as closely as possible. Results depend on factors such as gum contour and the colour of surrounding teeth. Discuss your expectations so the design can reflect your preferences.
The crown and implant cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed or infected. Neighbouring natural teeth can still develop cavities, so daily cleaning and regular checkups remain essential for the whole area.
Attaching the crown is usually comfortable because the implant has no nerve. Some people feel mild pressure or gum tenderness. If anaesthetic is needed for gum adjustment, the dentist will explain this beforehand so you know what to expect.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown or screw can often be retightened or recemented, but leaving it can damage components. Keep the crown if it comes out completely, and avoid chewing on that side until it is checked.
Implants replace missing teeth with a fixture placed in the jawbone. Hillcrest patients can discuss suitability, timelines and care at our Port Dover office.
A crown covers and strengthens a tooth weakened by decay, cracks or large fillings. Hillcrest patients can discuss materials and steps in Port Dover.
