An implant-supported crown is the replacement tooth attached to a dental implant once it has bonded with the jawbone. It is designed to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth and to handle everyday chewing. Unlike a bridge, it does not rely on reshaping neighbouring teeth for support, which helps preserve them.
Glen Meyer patients who have had an implant placed, or who are planning one, can discuss the crown stage with the dentist at our Port Dover office. The team can explain how the crown is made, how it is attached and how to care for it over the years.

Before the crown
After an implant is placed, the bone needs time to bond with its surface before it can carry chewing forces. The dentist will confirm that healing is complete, often using an examination and X-rays, before moving on to the crown stage. Rushing this step can put the implant at risk, so timing is planned around how well you have healed.
Healthy gums around the implant are important for both appearance and long-term stability. The dentist will check the gum tissue and neighbouring teeth for inflammation or decay. If you have gum disease elsewhere in the mouth, it may need treatment first. Good oral health around the site supports a better result for the crown and the implant beneath it.
Designing the crown
Impressions or scans record the position of the implant and surrounding teeth. The dentist selects a shade that blends with your natural teeth and designs the crown’s shape to fit your bite. If you plan to whiten your teeth, mention it before the crown is made, since crown materials do not change colour with whitening treatments afterward.
Implant crowns may be screwed into the implant or cemented onto a connector called an abutment. Each method has advantages related to appearance, access for repairs and the position of the implant. The dentist will explain which approach is recommended for your case and why, along with what it means for maintenance and any future repairs.
Attaching the crown
At the placement appointment, the dentist tries in the crown to check how it fits against the gum and neighbouring teeth, and how it looks in your smile. Your bite is tested to make sure the crown meets the opposing teeth evenly. Small adjustments may be made to improve comfort and function before it is permanently attached.
Once you and the dentist are satisfied, the crown is secured with a screw or cement. If it is screw-retained, the access hole is usually covered with a tooth-coloured filling material. You may notice mild tenderness in the gum for a short time. Contact the office if the bite feels high or the crown feels loose after placement.
Long-term care
The crown cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Brush gently twice a day, paying close attention to the gum line, and clean between the crown and neighbouring teeth daily. Ask the hygienist to recommend floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser that suit your implant.
Avoid biting very hard objects such as ice, pens or bones, which can chip the crown or loosen its connection. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be suggested to protect both the crown and the implant. Attend regular checkups so the crown, gums and bone levels can be monitored and any issues addressed early.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to arrange the crown stage of your implant or to ask about the overall process. The team can explain the timing and how many visits are typically involved.
Mention any plans for whitening and bring information about where your implant was placed if it was done at another office.

With good care, an implant crown can last many years, though it may eventually need replacement due to wear or damage. The implant itself may last longer than the crown. Regular checkups help monitor the crown and the surrounding tissues.
No, the crown material cannot decay. However, the gum and bone around the implant can become infected if plaque builds up, a condition called peri-implantitis. Daily cleaning and regular professional care help prevent this problem.
Crowns are designed to match the colour, shape and size of your natural teeth. The final appearance also depends on gum health and the implant’s position. Discuss your expectations with the dentist during planning so they can be addressed.
Contact the office promptly. A loose crown may mean the screw or cement has loosened, and it can often be tightened or recemented. Leaving it loose can damage the implant connection, so it should be checked soon.
Often, yes. Depending on how the crown is attached, it may be removed and replaced without disturbing the implant. The dentist will assess the damage and explain the options for repairing or replacing the crown.
An implant replaces a missing tooth root and supports a crown or denture. Glen Meyer patients can learn about eligibility, healing time and long-term care.
A crown covers a weakened tooth to restore its shape and strength. Glen Meyer patients can learn when crowns are advised, how they are made and their care.
