The tooth on top

The crown is what completes an implant and makes it functional.

An implant-supported crown is a custom tooth attached to a dental implant that has fused with the jawbone. It replaces a single missing tooth without relying on the neighbouring teeth for support. Getting the crown right involves careful attention to its shape and shade, the way it meets the gum and how it fits with the rest of your bite.

Forestville patients who have had an implant placed, or who are planning one, can discuss the crown stage at our Port Dover office. The dentist explains how the crown is designed and attached, and what daily care helps keep both the implant and the surrounding gum healthy for many years to come.

Ready for a crown?

The implant must be stable before the final crown is made.

Confirming the implant has healed

After placement, an implant needs time to integrate with the bone, often several months. The dentist checks its stability and may take X-rays to confirm that bone has formed snugly around it. Rushing this stage can put the implant at risk, so the final crown is usually made only once the implant is ready to handle normal chewing forces.

Assessing the gum around the implant

The gum around the implant should be healthy and shaped so that it frames a natural-looking crown. A healing cap or temporary crown is sometimes used to guide the gum into the right contour. The dentist explains how the gum is being prepared and why this step matters so much for appearance, especially when the implant replaces a front tooth.

Designing the crown

Several design decisions shape the final result.

Screw-retained or cemented crowns

Implant crowns can be held in place with a small screw or cemented onto a connecting piece called an abutment. Screw-retained crowns are easier to remove later for maintenance, while cemented crowns can offer certain cosmetic advantages in some positions. The dentist explains which approach suits the implant’s location and angle, and the reasons behind that recommendation.

Matching shade and shape

The crown is shaded to blend with the teeth beside it and shaped to fit your bite. For front teeth, small details such as translucency and edge shape make a big difference to how natural it looks. Ask to see the shade selected. If you plan to whiten your natural teeth, do so before the crown is made so the colour can be matched.

Fitting

Precise records lead to a well-fitting crown.

  1. Impressions or scans of the implant

The dentist takes impressions or a digital scan that capture the exact position of the implant, along with the neighbouring and opposing teeth. These records go to a dental laboratory, where the abutment and crown are made. The process is usually comfortable and often does not need freezing, because the implant itself has no nerve inside it.

  2. Placing and checking the crown

At the fitting visit, the crown is placed and checked for fit, contact with the teeth beside it, bite and appearance. Your bite is adjusted carefully so the implant is not overloaded when you chew. Planning this appointment in advance helps coordinate the trip from Forestville, and it often takes less time than the original implant placement did.

Long-term care

Implants need regular cleaning just like natural teeth.

  • Daily cleaning around the implant

Brush around the crown twice a day and clean between it and the neighbouring teeth with floss, interdental brushes or a water flosser. The gum around an implant can become inflamed if plaque is left to build up, just as it can around a natural tooth. Ask the hygienist which tools reach the area best and how to use them gently.

  • Watching for problems

Report bleeding, swelling, a loose crown or a change in how your teeth meet. Mention it if you grind your teeth, since heavy forces can strain an implant over time. Regular checkups and occasional X-rays help the dentist monitor bone levels and gum health. Catching inflammation around an implant early gives the best chance of keeping it stable.

Planning your appointment

Plan your implant crown from Forestville.

Call our Port Dover office to discuss the crown stage of implant treatment. If your implant was placed elsewhere, let the team know when and where, so they can request the details they need.

Bring any records or implant information from the placing provider, along with recent X-rays if you have them, to help the dentist plan the crown.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long after implant placement is the crown made?

Often several months, once the implant has integrated securely with the bone. The timeline varies with bone quality, the implant’s location and how healing progresses. The dentist will confirm when the implant is ready before any impressions for the final crown are taken.

Does getting an implant crown hurt?

Attaching the crown is usually comfortable because the implant has no nerve. You may feel some pressure as it is seated and checked. If the gum around the implant needed reshaping, it can feel a little tender for a short while afterward.

Can an implant crown get a cavity?

The crown itself cannot decay, but the gum and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Daily cleaning, along with regular checkups and hygiene visits, helps keep the area healthy and supports the implant over the long term.

What if my implant crown comes loose?

Call the office for advice and avoid chewing on that side until it has been checked. A loose crown or screw can often be tightened or re-cemented without much difficulty. Leaving it loose for too long can put extra strain on the implant.

How long do implant crowns last?

With good care, implant crowns can last many years, though they may eventually need replacing because of normal wear. Grinding, gum health and daily hygiene all affect how long they last. Regular checkups help the dentist spot wear before it becomes a problem.
