The tooth on top of the implant

The crown is the part of an implant everyone sees.

Once a dental implant has healed and bonded with the jawbone, a crown is attached to replace the visible part of the missing tooth. An implant-supported crown is designed to look and function much like a natural tooth. It does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support, which can help preserve their structure compared with some other replacement options.

If you are from Boston and have an implant in place or are planning one, our Port Dover office can explain the crown stage. Ask how the crown will be matched to your other teeth, how it will be attached and what the timeline looks like from healing to final placement.

Before the crown

The implant must be stable before the final crown is placed.

Confirming the implant has healed

After placement, an implant needs time to integrate with the surrounding bone. The dentist will check stability, often with x-rays and a gentle assessment, before moving on to the crown. Rushing this stage can put the implant’s long-term success at risk, so patience during healing is worthwhile, even if living with the gap for a while feels frustrating.

Gum shaping and temporaries

Sometimes a healing cap or a temporary crown is used to help shape the gum around the implant, so the final crown looks natural where it meets the gum. This is especially important for front teeth, where the gum line is visible when you smile. Ask whether a temporary is planned for your case, what it will look like and how long it is likely to stay.

Designing it

Careful design helps the crown blend in.

Shade and shape

The shade, shape and size of the crown are chosen to match the neighbouring teeth. If you plan to whiten, do it before the crown is made, because crowns do not change colour afterward. Impressions or a digital scan record the implant position and the surrounding teeth. Share your preferences about appearance during this stage, since changes later are harder to make.

Screw-retained or cemented

Implant crowns can be attached with a small screw or cemented onto a connecting piece called an abutment. Each approach has advantages for access, appearance and future maintenance. The dentist will explain which method suits your implant position and why. Understanding this helps you know what to expect if the crown ever needs to be removed, tightened or repaired.

Fitting day

Small adjustments help the crown feel natural.

  1. Checking fit and bite

The dentist checks how the crown fits against the gum and how it meets the opposing teeth when you bite and slide your jaw. You may be asked to bite on marking paper so any high spots can be smoothed. Implants do not have the slight cushioning that natural teeth have, so getting the bite exactly right is particularly important for comfort and longevity.

  2. Final attachment

Once you and the dentist are both satisfied with the fit and appearance, the crown is secured in place. If a screw is used, the small access hole is usually covered with a tooth-coloured filling. The dentist will explain how to clean around the new crown, what to avoid in the first days and when to return for a follow-up check.

Long-term care

An implant crown needs as much care as a natural tooth.

  • Cleaning around the implant

Brush twice daily and clean between teeth every day, paying close attention to the area where the crown meets the gum. Interdental brushes or a water flosser may be recommended for this spot. Plaque around implants can lead to inflammation and bone loss, a condition called peri-implantitis, so consistent daily cleaning is essential to keep the implant healthy for years.

  • Regular reviews

Regular checkups allow the dentist and hygienist to assess the gum around the implant, check the crown for wear or chips and look at bone levels on x-rays from time to time. Contact the office if the crown feels loose, the gum around it bleeds or swells, or you notice a bad taste, since these problems are easier to manage when caught early.

Planning your appointment

Planning your implant crown from Boston

Phone our Port Dover office to discuss the crown stage of your implant treatment. Let the team know when the implant was placed and whether it was done at this office or by another provider.

If your implant was placed elsewhere, bring any records or details about the implant system used, as the dentist will need them.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long after implant placement is the crown attached?

It varies. The implant usually needs several months to integrate with the bone before it can carry a crown. The dentist will check stability before proceeding, and the exact timeline depends on your healing, bone quality and overall treatment plan.

Will an implant crown look like my natural teeth?

The crown is designed to match the shade, shape and size of your neighbouring teeth. Gum shaping and careful planning help it blend in where it meets the gumline. Sharing your preferences early helps the dentist achieve a result you are happy with.

Can an implant crown get a cavity?

The crown and implant cannot decay, but the surrounding gum and bone can become inflamed if plaque builds up around them. Daily cleaning, including between the teeth, and regular checkups are essential to keep the area healthy over the long term.

What if my implant crown comes loose?

Contact the office. A loose crown may be caused by a loosened screw or failed cement and can often be addressed fairly simply. Avoid chewing on it until it has been checked, and keep the crown safe if it comes out completely.

How long do implant crowns last?

With good care, implant crowns can last many years. Like any crown, they may eventually wear or chip and need replacement while the implant itself stays in place. Regular checkups help monitor their condition and catch problems early.
