One tooth, replaced on its own

An implant crown stands independently, so planning the foundation matters.

An implant-supported crown replaces a single missing tooth. A small post is placed in the jawbone, allowed to bond with it, and then topped with a custom crown that looks and functions much like a natural tooth. Unlike a traditional bridge, it does not rely on the teeth on either side, which can help preserve their natural structure.

Bloomsburg patients considering an implant crown can start with a consultation at our Port Dover office. The dentist reviews the space, bone, gums and overall health, explains whether an implant is likely to succeed and walks through each stage from placement to the final crown, including the time healing typically takes.

Is it suitable?

The site and your health both influence success.

Assessing the gap

The dentist evaluates the space where the tooth is missing, checking the width, the height of the bone and the position of nearby nerves, roots or sinuses. Imaging may include standard X-rays or a three-dimensional scan. If the bone is thin, grafting may be discussed. The gums should be healthy, so active gum disease is usually treated before planning proceeds.

Health and lifestyle factors

Conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, certain medications, smoking and heavy grinding can affect healing and long-term outcomes. Be open about these factors so the dentist can assess risk accurately. They do not always rule out an implant, but they may change the plan, the timeline or the need to coordinate with your physician beforehand on timing.

Planning the crown

The crown is designed to blend with your smile and bite.

Matching neighbouring teeth

The crown’s shape, size and shade are chosen to match the surrounding teeth, which is particularly important for front teeth. The dentist considers how the gum will look around the crown and how your bite will meet it. Ask about the materials used and how they compare in strength and appearance, so you understand the choices being made on your behalf.

Comparing with a bridge

A bridge is a common alternative that avoids surgery but requires reshaping the neighbouring teeth for crowns. A removable partial denture is another option. The dentist can explain how each compares in terms of durability, maintenance and effect on nearby teeth, helping you decide whether an implant crown is the best fit for your goals.

Treatment stages

The process unfolds in stages over several months.

  1. Placing the implant

The implant is placed in the bone under local anaesthetic, sometimes by a specialist when the case is complex. A healing cap or temporary tooth may be used while the bone bonds with the implant. You will receive instructions on eating, cleaning and managing discomfort. Follow-up appointments check that healing is progressing as expected before the next step.

  2. Attaching the final crown

Once the implant is stable, an abutment is attached and impressions or scans are taken for the crown. The finished crown is then fitted, and the dentist checks the bite, contacts with neighbouring teeth and appearance. Small adjustments may be made. You can ask questions about care and what to expect as you get used to the new tooth.

Long-term care

An implant crown needs consistent care to last.

  • Cleaning around the implant

Brush the implant crown twice a day and clean the gumline carefully. Floss or interdental brushes help remove plaque between teeth. Inflammation around an implant, called peri-implantitis, can lead to bone loss if plaque is left to build up. The hygienist can show you techniques and tools suited to cleaning around your particular implant and crown.

  • Protecting the crown

Regular checkups allow the dentist to monitor the implant, the crown and the surrounding gum and bone. If you grind your teeth, a night guard may be recommended to reduce stress on the implant. Report any looseness, discomfort, bleeding or swelling promptly, since early attention makes most problems around implants considerably easier to resolve. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.

Planning your appointment

Plan an implant consultation from Bloomsburg.

Contact our Port Dover office to discuss replacing a single missing tooth. Let the team know when the tooth was lost, whether it was due to injury, decay or gum disease, and any relevant health conditions.

If you have X-rays or scans from another provider, ask about sending them ahead so the dentist can review them before your visit.

Implant crown questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

How long does it take to get an implant crown?

Several months is typical, since the implant needs time to bond with the bone before the crown is placed. If grafting is needed, the timeline may be longer. The dentist will outline the expected schedule for your situation at the consultation.

Will the implant crown look like my other teeth?

The crown is custom-made to match the shape and shade of your neighbouring teeth. The dentist will discuss appearance during planning and check how the crown looks and fits before it is permanently attached to the implant.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Each option has advantages. An implant avoids reshaping neighbouring teeth, while a bridge avoids surgery and may be quicker. The dentist will explain the pros and cons based on your health, bone and personal preferences.

Can an implant crown get a cavity?

The crown itself cannot decay, but the gums and bone around the implant can become inflamed if plaque builds up. Good cleaning and regular checkups are essential for keeping the implant and surrounding tissues healthy.

What if I grind my teeth?

Grinding can place extra stress on implants and crowns. The dentist may recommend a night guard to help protect them. Mention grinding or clenching during your consultation so it can be considered in the treatment plan.
