Swelling of the face, jaw or gums often comes from an infection in a tooth or the surrounding gum. It may start as a small bump or a tender spot and grow over hours or days. Some infections stay localized, but others can spread into the tissues of the face and neck, which can become dangerous.
If you are in Walsh and notice dental swelling, call our Port Dover office to describe it. The team will ask questions to judge urgency and may advise you to go to hospital if warning signs are present. When dental care is appropriate, the dentist will find and treat the source.

Red flags
Difficulty breathing or swallowing, being unable to open your mouth, swelling under the tongue, around the eye or down the neck, high fever, confusion or feeling very unwell all need emergency medical care immediately. These can signal a spreading infection that requires hospital treatment, sometimes including intravenous antibiotics or surgical drainage, which a dental office cannot provide.
A swollen gum, a pimple-like bump, mild facial swelling, throbbing tooth pain or a bad taste in the mouth are reasons to call the dental office the same day. Note when the swelling began and whether it seems to be growing; a quick photo every few hours can help you judge. Do not wait for symptoms to settle on their own, because they often return.
While you wait
Use a cold compress on the outside of the face for short periods, keep your head raised when resting and rinse gently with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief if it is safe for you and follow the label exactly. Stay well hydrated and rest as much as you can, since infections can leave you feeling drained and run down.
Avoid applying heat to the face, pressing on or cutting a swelling, or placing medication directly on the gum. Do not take leftover antibiotics from a past illness, which may be the wrong type or dose. Keep monitoring the swelling closely and seek emergency care right away if any of the red-flag signs develop while you are waiting.
Treatment
The dentist examines your teeth, gums and face and usually takes X-rays to find the source of the infection. Common causes include an abscessed tooth, a deep gum infection or a partly erupted wisdom tooth. Your temperature and medical history may also be checked, since some conditions, such as diabetes, affect how infections behave and heal.
Treatment may involve draining the infection, starting root canal treatment, cleaning a gum pocket or removing the tooth. Antibiotics may be prescribed when the infection is spreading or you are at higher medical risk. Severe infections may require referral to hospital or an oral surgeon, and the dentist will help arrange that if it is needed.
Recovery
Take medications exactly as prescribed, eat soft foods and keep the area clean with gentle brushing. Swelling should gradually decrease over the following days. If it increases instead, a fever develops or you feel worse rather than better, contact the office or seek emergency care right away; do not wait for a scheduled follow-up appointment to come around.
Complete any recommended follow-up, such as finishing root canal treatment or placing a crown, even once you feel well. Regular checkups help catch decay and gum disease before infection has a chance to develop. Planning those visits from Walsh ahead of time can help you avoid emergencies like this one down the road and the worry that comes with them.
Planning your appointment
Phone 519-583-2929 promptly to describe your swelling and symptoms. The team will advise whether to come in or go to hospital instead. Same-day visits depend on availability and clinical need on the day.
Bring a full medication list, allergy information and details of any antibiotics already prescribed by another provider, such as a walk-in clinic or hospital.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
It can be. Dental infections can spread into the face and neck if left untreated. Swelling with breathing or swallowing difficulty, fever or rapid spread needs emergency medical care immediately, before any dental appointment is considered.
Antibiotics may help control spread, but the source usually needs dental treatment such as drainage, root canal or extraction for the infection to resolve. Without that, the infection is likely to return once the medicine is finished.
Heat is generally not recommended, as it may encourage swelling to spread further. Use a cold compress on the outside of the face for short periods and seek dental or medical care promptly, depending on your symptoms.
An infection may drain through the gum and then refill, causing swelling to rise and fall over days or weeks. This does not mean it has healed. Arrange an assessment so the source can be found and treated properly.
If swelling is growing, causes fever or affects breathing, swallowing or opening your mouth, do not wait. Go to the emergency department. Otherwise, call the office for advice and check the voicemail for after-hours instructions.
