Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaSwelling is a signal
Dental infections can spread from a tooth or the gums into the surrounding tissues of the face and neck. Swelling, warmth, redness, fever and pain are common signs. While many infections can be managed with dental treatment, some progress quickly and become dangerous, so recognizing warning signs and acting promptly is important.
If you notice facial swelling in Villa Nova, first decide whether it needs emergency medical care. If it does not, call our Port Dover office right away to describe the swelling and arrange an urgent assessment.

Assessing severity
Go to the hospital or call 911 if swelling is spreading rapidly, affecting your eye or neck, making it hard to breathe, swallow or open your mouth, or if you have a high fever, feel very unwell or confused. These signs can indicate a serious spreading infection that needs urgent medical treatment.
Localized swelling of the gum or cheek, a bad taste, throbbing pain, tenderness when biting or a gum pimple that drains suggest a dental infection that should be seen promptly. Call the dental office and describe how quickly the swelling developed and whether it is getting worse.
While waiting
A cold compress applied to the outside of the face in short intervals may help reduce swelling. Keep your head elevated when resting. Use over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the label and in line with your medical advice. Stay hydrated and monitor how the swelling changes.
Do not apply heat to the face, as this may encourage the infection to spread. Do not try to squeeze or drain the swelling yourself. Avoid placing aspirin on the gum. If swelling worsens, spreads or you develop new symptoms, seek emergency care rather than waiting.
Treatment
The dentist will examine the swelling, check nearby teeth and gums and take X-rays to locate the source. Infections often originate from a tooth with deep decay, a cracked tooth, a failing root canal or gum disease. Identifying the cause guides treatment.
Treatment may include draining the infection, root canal treatment or extraction. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases, particularly with spreading infection or fever, but they generally support dental treatment rather than replace it. Severe cases may require hospital care or referral to an oral surgeon.
Recovery
Swelling should gradually decrease after treatment. If antibiotics were prescribed, take them exactly as directed. Contact the office if swelling returns, pain increases or fever develops, and seek emergency care if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult.
If the infection came from a tooth that was treated with a root canal, it will typically need a final restoration. If it was removed, replacement options can be discussed after healing. Regular checkups help prevent future infections by catching decay and gum problems early.
Planning your appointment
For swelling without emergency signs, call our Port Dover office immediately. Describe how fast it developed and any fever so the team can advise on urgency.
If swelling affects breathing, swallowing or your eye, call 911 or go to emergency rather than travelling to the dental office.
