Swelling in the cheek, jaw or gum often means an infection has developed around a tooth or in the gum. It may be accompanied by pain, a bad taste, fever or difficulty opening the mouth. Dental infections can spread to surrounding tissues, so swelling should never be ignored, even if the pain seems manageable.
If you are in Teeterville and notice dental swelling, first check for emergency signs. If none are present, call our Port Dover office promptly to describe the symptoms. The team will advise how soon you should be seen, what to watch for in the meantime and when to go to hospital instead.

Assessing severity
Rapidly increasing swelling, swelling under the tongue or down the neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever, confusion or feeling very unwell need immediate emergency medical attention. These can indicate a serious spreading infection that a dental office alone cannot manage. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or unwell; call 911 or have someone take you.
Localized swelling near a tooth, a gum boil, throbbing pain or a bad taste should prompt a call to the dentist the same day if possible. Note when the swelling started, whether it is growing and whether you have a temperature. The team can advise on timing based on your description and arrange an assessment.
Until you are seen
A cold compress on the outside of the face for short periods may ease swelling and discomfort. Over-the-counter pain relief can help if it is suitable for you, taken as directed. Rinse gently with warm salt water. Stay hydrated and rest, and keep monitoring for changes in swelling, fever or breathing throughout the day and night.
Do not apply heat, which may increase swelling and spread infection. Do not try to drain swelling yourself or use leftover antibiotics from an earlier illness. Avoid placing medications directly on the gum. If symptoms worsen before your appointment, seek emergency care rather than waiting for the scheduled time, even if it is late at night.
Treatment
The dentist examines the area and usually takes X-rays to find the source, such as an abscessed tooth, a gum infection or a partially erupted wisdom tooth. They may also check your temperature, look at your neck and ask about general health. Identifying the cause accurately guides the treatment plan and how urgent it is.
Treatment may include draining the infection, starting root canal, removing the tooth or cleaning a gum pocket. Antibiotics may be prescribed in certain situations, usually alongside treatment of the source. Severe infections may require referral to a hospital or specialist. The dentist will explain each step and why it is recommended for you in particular.
Recovery
Take any prescribed medication exactly as directed and complete the full course unless told otherwise. Swelling usually decreases gradually over several days after treatment. Contact the office if it increases, fever develops or you feel worse. Seek emergency care immediately for any breathing or swallowing difficulty, which should never wait for an office visit or callback.
If the first visit focused on draining or controlling infection, further treatment such as completing a root canal or placing a crown will likely be needed. Keep follow-up appointments, even if you feel better, so the source is fully addressed before you return to normal routines in Teeterville and the infection does not come back.
Planning your appointment
If there are no emergency signs, phone our Port Dover office promptly to describe the swelling and pain. The team will advise how soon you need to be seen and what to bring.
Bring a list of medications and allergies, and note when the swelling started and whether you have had a fever.
Before you book

It should always be taken seriously. Rapid swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing needs emergency medical care right away. Other swelling still needs prompt dental attention, ideally the same day, so the source can be found and treated.
Antibiotics may help control spread, but they usually do not resolve the source. Dental treatment such as drainage, root canal or extraction is generally required. Without it, the infection often returns once the medication is finished.
Use cold compresses for short periods on the outside of the face, with a cloth between the ice and your skin. Avoid heat, which can encourage swelling to increase. Neither replaces treatment of the infected tooth or gum.
Common causes include abscessed teeth, gum infections and partially erupted wisdom teeth. Less often, a cracked tooth or failed root canal is involved. X-rays and an exam help the dentist identify the specific cause and plan treatment.
It often improves over several days once the source is treated, though some tenderness can linger. If swelling increases, spreads or you develop a fever after treatment, contact the office promptly or seek emergency care if severe.
