Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsSwelling is a warning sign
Facial swelling linked to a tooth usually means infection has spread beyond the tooth into the surrounding tissues. It may start as a tender gum or a dull ache, then progress to a puffy cheek, jaw or area beneath the eye. Some infections stay localized, but others spread quickly and can become dangerous.
If swelling appears and you are in Jarvis, first check for the danger signs listed above. If none are present, call our Port Dover office promptly so the team can discuss how urgently you need to be seen.

Danger signs
Swelling that spreads over hours, closes the eye, extends down the neck or under the jaw, pushes up the tongue, or comes with difficulty breathing, swallowing or opening your mouth requires emergency medical care. High fever, chills, confusion or feeling very unwell are also urgent warning signs. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.
Localized gum swelling, a pimple on the gum, a tender swollen area near one tooth, mild facial puffiness or a bad taste with pain should be assessed by a dentist promptly. These may not need a hospital, but they do need treatment soon to stop the infection from progressing.
Until you are seen
Use a cold compress on the outside of the face in short intervals. Rinse gently with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter pain relief if it is safe for you, following directions. Keep your head elevated when lying down. Stay hydrated and monitor the swelling closely for changes.
Do not apply heat to the face, which can encourage infection to spread outward. Do not try to drain swelling yourself. Avoid using leftover antibiotics. If swelling worsens or new symptoms appear while you wait, reassess whether emergency care is needed rather than waiting for your dental appointment.
Treatment
The dentist examines the area and takes X-rays to identify the cause, often an abscessed tooth, gum infection or a partially erupted wisdom tooth. Treatment may include draining the infection, starting root canal treatment, cleaning a gum pocket or extracting the tooth. The dentist will explain the recommended approach.
Antibiotics may be prescribed when infection has spread into surrounding tissues or when you have certain health conditions. They support treatment but do not replace removing the source. Take them exactly as prescribed. Severe infections may require referral to hospital or a specialist.
Healing
Swelling and tenderness usually begin to subside within a few days of effective treatment. Follow all instructions for medications, rinsing and eating. If swelling increases, fever develops or you feel worse, contact the office promptly or seek emergency care if danger signs appear.
Complete any recommended follow-up, such as finishing a root canal and placing a crown. Untreated or partially treated teeth can become infected again. Regular checkups and prompt attention to toothaches or gum problems reduce the chance of future infections.
Planning your appointment
If no danger signs are present, call our Port Dover office right away. Describe where the swelling is, how fast it is changing and any fever.

It can be. Infection can spread to the neck, eye or airway. Rapid spreading, fever, or difficulty breathing or swallowing need emergency medical care immediately.
It may fluctuate, but the infection usually remains without treatment. A dentist needs to address the source to resolve it and prevent it from returning.
Use cold compresses on the outside of the face. Avoid heat, which may encourage the infection to spread. Seek treatment rather than relying on home remedies.
Antibiotics can help control spreading infection but do not remove the cause. Dental treatment such as drainage, root canal or extraction is still needed.
Common causes include an abscessed tooth, advanced gum infection and infected wisdom teeth. The dentist will identify the source with an exam and X-rays.
A throbbing tooth, gum pimple or swelling may signal an abscess. Jarvis patients should call our Port Dover office promptly to discuss symptoms and urgent assessment.
