An emergency extraction may be considered when a tooth is severely broken, badly infected, very loose or causing intense pain that cannot be managed another way. Removing the tooth can relieve pain and remove a source of infection, but it is permanent. Even when time feels short, you deserve to understand why it is recommended and what the alternatives are.
If you are in Vittoria with a painful or damaged tooth, call our Port Dover office and describe the symptoms. The team will discuss how urgently you need to be seen and current availability. At the visit, the dentist will examine the tooth and explain whether extraction is necessary or whether another treatment might save it.

When it is advised
A tooth that has split below the gumline, has very extensive decay that cannot be restored, is causing a spreading infection or is extremely loose from gum disease may need to be removed. Wisdom teeth causing repeated severe infection can also be candidates. The dentist will use examination and X-rays to explain why the tooth is unlikely to be saved.
Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or other care could keep the tooth, and what the outlook would be. Ask about the risks of delaying removal and what replacement options might be available afterward. Even under pressure, understanding the alternatives helps you make a decision you will be comfortable with later. Ask for a moment to think.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone medications and supplements that affect bleeding. Mention heart conditions, diabetes, pregnancy and recent surgeries. Allergies to medications or anaesthetic should be shared. In some cases, the dentist may need to consult your physician before proceeding, which can affect timing. Bring medication bottles if you are unsure of names or doses.
Arrange for someone to accompany you if you feel unwell or if sedation is planned. Have soft foods and any recommended supplies ready at home. Ask whether you should eat beforehand. If you are travelling back to Vittoria, think about how you will manage the trip comfortably immediately after the procedure. Gauze at home helps too.
The extraction
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, though active infection can sometimes make numbing harder. Tell the dentist if you feel sharp pain so more anaesthetic can be given. The tooth is loosened and removed. Broken or impacted teeth may need a surgical approach with a small incision or stitches. Feeling pressure is normal, but sharp pain is not.
If infection is present, the dentist may drain the area during the procedure. Antibiotics may or may not be prescribed, depending on the extent of infection and your health. The socket is cleaned and gauze placed to help a clot form. You will receive aftercare instructions before you leave the office. Ask questions before leaving.
Recovery
Bite on gauze as instructed and avoid rinsing, spitting, smoking and drinking through straws for the period advised, to protect the blood clot. Eat soft, cool foods and rest. Ask a pharmacist or physician about appropriate pain relief. Contact the office if bleeding does not slow, pain worsens after a few days or a bad taste develops.
Once the area has healed, the dentist can discuss whether the tooth should be replaced and which options suit you, such as an implant, bridge or partial denture. Leaving a gap can allow nearby teeth to shift. There is usually time to consider these options carefully after the urgent problem has been resolved. Ask about timing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your pain, swelling or damage. The team will discuss timing and availability, and whether you should seek emergency medical care before a dental visit.
Bring a full list of medications and allergies, and arrange a companion if you expect to feel unwell or sedation is planned.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Often it can, though active infection can affect numbing and healing. The dentist may drain the infection, prescribe antibiotics or remove the tooth depending on the situation. You will be told why a particular approach is recommended for your case.
Not always. Root canal treatment may save a tooth with an infected nerve if enough structure remains. The dentist will explain whether the tooth can be restored and compare the outlook of keeping it with the outcome of removal.
Some soreness and swelling are normal and usually improve over several days. Increasing pain after a few days, bad taste or fever may signal a problem such as dry socket or infection. Contact the office if this happens.
Antibiotics are not always necessary. The dentist will consider the extent of infection, your medical history and other factors. If prescribed, take them exactly as directed and finish the course unless told otherwise by the prescriber.
Timing depends on healing and the replacement option chosen. Some options, such as implants, may require a waiting period. The dentist will discuss replacement once the urgent issue is resolved and the site has had time to heal.
