Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaUrgent removal, carefully planned
Sometimes a tooth is so badly broken, decayed or infected that removing it is the most practical way to resolve pain and protect your health. An emergency extraction can provide relief, but it is still a surgical procedure that requires a proper diagnosis, a review of your health and clear aftercare. Other options are always considered before removal is recommended.
If you are in Villa Nova with a tooth that may need urgent removal, call our Port Dover office and describe your symptoms. The team will discuss urgency, and you may want to arrange a ride home after the procedure.

When removal is advised
Teeth with fractures extending below the gum, severe decay that has destroyed most of the structure, advanced gum disease with significant bone loss or recurring infection that cannot be managed may be candidates for extraction. The dentist will examine the tooth and take an X-ray before making a recommendation.
Root canal treatment, crowns or other restorations may save some teeth that seem hopeless at first. Ask the dentist to explain why extraction is suggested over other options and what the long-term outlook would be for each. Understanding the reasoning helps you feel confident in your decision, even when time is short.
Safety first
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone medications and any recent antibiotics. Conditions like diabetes, heart problems or a weakened immune system may affect bleeding, infection risk and healing. The dentist may need to consult with your physician before proceeding.
If there is significant swelling or infection, the dentist may address that first or prescribe medication before removing the tooth. Swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, or affects breathing or swallowing, requires emergency medical care rather than an office extraction.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic numbs the area. You will feel pressure as the tooth is loosened, but should not feel sharp pain; let the dentist know if you do. Some teeth come out in one piece, while others need to be sectioned. Gauze is placed afterward to help a blood clot form.
Complex extractions, such as impacted teeth or those near important structures, may be referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain the reasons and help arrange the referral. In the meantime, they may provide pain relief or other temporary measures.
Healing
Bite on gauze as instructed, rest, and avoid spitting, using straws, smoking or rinsing vigorously for the first day. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Use pain relief as directed. Follow the written aftercare instructions, and contact the office with any questions.
Contact the office if bleeding does not stop with pressure, pain increases after a few days, or swelling or fever develops. These may be signs of dry socket or infection. Once healing is complete, the dentist can discuss whether and how to replace the missing tooth.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you think a tooth may need urgent removal. Describe your pain, swelling and any fever so the team can advise on timing and safety.
Bring your medication list and plan for someone to drive you home if sedation is used or you expect to feel unsteady afterward.

Sometimes. In other cases, the dentist may manage the infection first. The approach depends on swelling, health factors and the tooth itself.
Local anaesthetic numbs the area so you should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Soreness afterward is normal and can usually be managed.
Tell the dentist. Do not stop medication without medical advice. The dentist may consult your physician to plan the extraction safely.
Initial healing often takes one to two weeks, though complete healing takes longer. Follow aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of complications.
That depends on its location and function. The dentist will discuss replacement options such as bridges, implants or dentures once healing is complete.
Removing a tooth is a careful choice, not a first resort. Villa Nova patients can read why removal may be suggested and how early healing is protected.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: finding the cause and easing it. Villa Nova patients can learn what to describe and expect in Port Dover.
