Sometimes a tooth is too damaged, infected or loose to be saved, and removing it is the safest way to relieve pain and protect your health. Emergency extractions may be needed after severe decay, a tooth split below the gumline, advanced gum disease or an injury. The dentist will always consider whether the tooth can be saved before recommending removal.
If you are near Vanessa and have a painful or broken tooth, call our Port Dover office to describe your symptoms. The team will arrange an assessment and explain whether an extraction is needed, whether it can be done right away, and what other options may exist before any decision is made.

Is removal needed
An extraction may be recommended when a tooth is fractured vertically through the root, broken too far below the gum to repair, severely decayed, very loose from gum disease, or the source of a spreading infection that cannot be controlled another way. X-rays help the dentist see the extent of damage and plan the safest approach for removal.
Ask whether root canal treatment, a crown or other repairs could realistically save the tooth, and what the outlook would be. Sometimes saving a tooth is possible but uncertain or costly. The dentist will explain the pros and cons of each option, and you can discuss what matters most to you, whether that is keeping the tooth or quick relief.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, bone-strengthening drugs and supplements, and about conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or a weakened immune system. Some situations need extra precautions or coordination with your physician. Do not stop prescribed medications on your own; ask the dentist and your doctor how to manage them safely.
If an infection is present, the dentist may prescribe antibiotics before or after the extraction. Arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day and have soft foods ready. If you work outdoors or do physical labour, ask how long to take it easy.
The procedure
The area is numbed thoroughly before the tooth is removed. You may feel pressure, but you should not feel sharp pain; raise your hand if you do, so more anaesthetic can be given. Once the tooth is out, gauze is placed over the socket to control bleeding and help a protective blood clot form during the first hours.
Teeth that are broken at the gumline, have curved roots or are severely infected may require a surgical extraction, which can involve a small incision, removing bone or sectioning the tooth. Stitches may be placed. Occasionally a referral to an oral surgeon is recommended for complex cases, and the dentist will explain why if so.
Recovery
Keep gauze in place as directed, and avoid rinsing, spitting, smoking, drinking through a straw or strenuous activity for at least the first day, since these can dislodge the clot. Use cold compresses for swelling, eat soft foods and take pain relief as directed. Call the office if bleeding continues, pain increases after a few days, or you develop fever.
Once the area heals, discuss whether to replace the tooth. Gaps can allow nearby teeth to shift and affect chewing. Options include implants, bridges or partial dentures, each with different costs and timelines. Not every tooth needs replacing, such as wisdom teeth, and the dentist will explain what makes sense for you once healing is complete.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office if you have a painful, broken or infected tooth. Describe your symptoms so the team can arrange an assessment and explain whether an extraction or other treatment is appropriate.
Bring a complete medication list, have soft foods ready at home, and arrange a driver if you think sedation might be needed.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Often it can, though sometimes the dentist prescribes antibiotics first if the infection is severe or the area is very swollen. The dentist will assess your situation and explain the safest timing. Spreading swelling or breathing problems need emergency medical care.
The area is numbed, so you should feel pressure rather than sharp pain. Some soreness afterward is normal and usually improves over a few days. Follow the pain-relief advice you receive, and call if pain increases rather than improves.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot is lost from the socket, exposing bone and causing increasing pain a few days after the extraction. Avoiding straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing helps prevent it. Call the office if you suspect one.
Many people return to light activity within a day or two, but strenuous work or heavy lifting may need to wait a little longer to avoid bleeding. Ask the dentist about your specific job and how long to rest.
Not always. The dentist will discuss whether replacing the tooth is advisable, based on its location, your bite and your preferences. Options may include an implant, bridge or partial denture, which can be planned after healing.
Sometimes removing a tooth is the healthiest choice. Vanessa patients can learn how extractions are planned, what healing involves and how to replace the tooth.
Sudden pain, swelling or a broken tooth needs a focused exam. Vanessa patients can learn what an emergency assessment covers and how to prepare for the visit.
