Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for Turkey PointWhen a tooth must come out soon
Sometimes a tooth is too badly broken, infected or loose to repair, and leaving it in place may cause ongoing pain or allow infection to spread. In those situations, the dentist may recommend removing it promptly. The decision is made after examination and X-rays, and other options are discussed wherever they are reasonable.
If you are in Turkey Point and dealing with a severely painful or damaged tooth, call our Port Dover office. Describe the symptoms so the team can advise how urgently you should be assessed.

When it is needed
A tooth split below the gum line, severe infection that cannot be managed otherwise, advanced gum disease causing extreme looseness or a wisdom tooth causing serious infection may lead to an urgent extraction. The dentist evaluates the tooth, surrounding bone and your overall health before recommending removal.
Root canal treatment, crown repair or gum therapy may sometimes save a tooth that seems lost. Ask the dentist whether these are realistic and what the outlook would be. If extraction is advised, ask what replacement options exist so you can plan ahead, even if the immediate priority is relief from pain or infection.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners and bone-related drugs, and about conditions such as heart problems, diabetes or bleeding disorders. Mention allergies to antibiotics or anaesthetics. If infection is present, the dentist may discuss whether antibiotics are needed before or after the procedure.
If sedation is planned, arrange a driver for the trip back. Have soft foods and cold compresses ready at home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day rather than heading out on the water or to the beach. Bring someone with you if you are feeling unwell or anxious.
The extraction
The area is numbed thoroughly, and the dentist checks that you are comfortable before beginning. Infection can sometimes make numbing less effective, so let the dentist know if you feel sharp pain. The tooth is gently loosened and removed; broken or complex teeth may be taken out in sections.
Gauze is placed to control bleeding and help a clot form. Stitches may be used. The dentist will give written instructions on bleeding control, pain management and diet. Ask questions before you leave, and make sure you know how to reach the office if a problem arises.
Recovery
Rest, keep your head raised and use cold compresses for swelling. Avoid spitting, straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing to protect the clot. Eat soft foods and chew on the opposite side. Gentle salt-water rinses may be recommended after the first day. Follow instructions about pain relief and any prescribed medication.
Contact the office if bleeding continues despite pressure, pain increases after the first few days, swelling worsens or you develop a fever. Seek emergency care for spreading swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Once healed, discuss replacement options with the dentist, especially if you will be leaving Turkey Point soon.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Often, yes, though in some cases the dentist may recommend antibiotics first. The decision depends on the infection and your health.
Some soreness is normal and usually manageable with recommended pain relief. Increasing pain after a few days should be reported to the office.
Sometimes. Ask the dentist whether root canal treatment or other repairs are possible and what the chances of success would be.
Start with soft foods and gradually return to normal eating as the area heals. Avoid the extraction site when chewing for several days.
Let the dentist know. They can give you instructions and copies of records so follow-up can continue with your regular dentist.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be the safest option. Turkey Point patients can learn about assessment, the procedure and healing at our Port Dover office.
