When a tooth must come out

Urgent removal can relieve pain and stop an infection from spreading.

Sometimes a tooth is too broken, decayed or infected to save, and keeping it would mean ongoing pain or risk to your health. An emergency extraction removes the source of the problem. It is usually considered after the dentist has examined the tooth and explained whether any treatment could reasonably preserve it.

If you live in Teeterville and have severe pain or a tooth that has broken badly, call our Port Dover office to describe the situation. The team will advise how soon you can be seen and whether removal is likely to be one of the options discussed at the appointment.

When it is needed

Removal is considered when saving the tooth is not realistic.

Teeth that cannot be restored

A tooth split down the root, decay that has destroyed most of the crown or a tooth loosened by advanced gum disease may not be restorable. The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to assess the roots and surrounding bone. If root canal treatment or another repair could work, those options should be discussed first, even in an urgent situation.

Infection and pain

An abscessed tooth causing severe pain or swelling may need removal to control infection, especially when it cannot be treated with root canal. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases to manage spreading infection. The dentist will explain why extraction is recommended, what alternatives exist and what each choice would mean for your bite and future treatment.

Before the procedure

Even in an emergency, safety checks matter.

  • Health and medication review

Tell the dentist about blood thinners, heart conditions, diabetes, recent surgeries and allergies. These can affect bleeding, healing and medication choices. Do not stop prescribed medications without guidance from the prescriber. In some situations, the dentist may need to consult your physician before proceeding, which can affect timing on the day of your visit somewhat.

  • Planning for the day

Eat something light beforehand unless instructed otherwise, since an empty stomach can make some people feel faint. If sedation is planned, arrange for someone to drive you home to Teeterville. Have soft foods and recommended pain relief ready at home. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day after the extraction rather than returning to work.

The extraction

Local anaesthetic keeps the procedure comfortable.

  1. Numbing and removal

The dentist numbs the area thoroughly before starting. You may feel pressure as the tooth is loosened and removed, but sharp pain should be reported immediately so more anaesthetic can be given. Some teeth require surgical removal, which can involve a small incision or dividing the tooth into sections. Stitches may be placed if needed to support healing.

  2. Immediate aftercare

Gauze is placed over the site to help a clot form. You will receive instructions on how long to bite down and how to manage any bleeding at home. Ask any questions before you leave, including what to expect for pain and swelling over the next few days and when you should call the office.

Recovery

Protect the healing site to avoid complications.

The first few days

Avoid spitting, rinsing vigorously, drinking through a straw and smoking for at least the first day, as these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods and keep your head elevated when resting. Contact the office if bleeding continues, pain worsens after several days or you develop fever or increasing swelling, since these may need attention.

Planning replacement

Once healed, consider whether the tooth should be replaced. Implants, bridges and partial dentures are common options, each with different timelines and upkeep. Some back teeth may not need replacing at all. The dentist can discuss the impact on your bite and help you decide on timing, so the gap does not cause neighbouring teeth to drift.

Emergency extraction questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can a badly broken tooth always be saved?

Not always. Some teeth can be restored with root canal and a crown, while others are too damaged below the gum line. The dentist will assess the tooth with an exam and X-rays and explain the realistic options before anything is removed.

Will I be in pain after an extraction?

Some discomfort is normal for a few days and is usually managed with recommended pain relief and rest. Pain that increases after several days could signal dry socket and should be reported to the office so it can be treated.

How soon can I eat after an extraction?

Once the numbness wears off, you can usually eat soft foods such as yogurt, eggs or soup. Avoid chewing directly on the site and steer clear of hot, spicy or crunchy foods for the first few days while the area heals.

Do I need antibiotics?

Not always. Antibiotics may be prescribed if there is spreading infection or certain health conditions that call for them. Removing the source of infection is often the main treatment. The dentist will decide based on your symptoms and medical history.

Should I replace the tooth?

It depends on where the tooth was and how its loss affects your bite and appearance. The dentist can discuss replacement options such as implants, bridges or dentures once healing is underway, and explain the timing that works best.
