Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsWhen removal cannot wait
An emergency extraction may be needed when a tooth is severely infected, fractured below the gum line, badly broken after an injury or causing intense pain that cannot be managed another way. The dentist will usually consider whether the tooth can be saved first, but in some situations removal is the safest and most practical option.
Patients from St. Williams who are facing a painful, damaged tooth can call our Port Dover office to explain what is happening. The team will discuss urgency and availability, and the dentist will examine the tooth before recommending whether extraction is the right step.

When it is needed
A tooth split down the middle, a root fracture, a tooth loosened beyond repair by injury or gum disease and an abscess in a tooth too damaged to restore are common reasons for urgent extraction. Wisdom teeth causing infection or severe pain may also need prompt removal.
Root canal treatment, a crown or other repairs can sometimes save a tooth that seems hopeless. Ask the dentist about alternatives, their likely success and the time involved. If urgent relief is needed, temporary measures may sometimes be used while you decide on longer-term options.
Before extraction
Tell the dentist about blood thinners, bisphosphonates, diabetes, heart conditions, joint replacements and any other medications or health concerns. Some situations require coordination with your physician or special precautions. Mention allergies to medications or anaesthetics as well.
If there is significant infection, the dentist may recommend antibiotics or drainage before or alongside extraction. Swelling can sometimes make numbing more difficult. The dentist will explain how infection affects the timing and approach, and whether referral to an oral surgeon is appropriate.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. You should feel pressure but not sharp pain. The dentist loosens the tooth and removes it carefully. Gauze is placed to help a blood clot form. Tell the dentist if you feel discomfort at any point so additional anaesthetic can be considered.
Teeth that are broken, curved or impacted may need to be sectioned or removed through a small incision. Stitches may be placed. Very complex extractions may be referred to an oral surgeon. Ask what to expect for your tooth so you can plan the rest of your day.
Healing
Bite on gauze as instructed, rest and avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, smoking and using straws for the time recommended. Eat soft foods on the other side and keep the area clean as directed. Take pain relief as advised, and use cold packs for swelling during the first day.
Call the office if pain worsens after a few days, bleeding persists despite pressure, you develop fever or swelling increases. A dry socket can cause rising pain several days later. Seek emergency medical care for difficulty breathing or swallowing or swelling that spreads quickly.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office and describe your pain, any swelling and what happened to the tooth. The team will discuss urgency and timing. Same-day care depends on availability.
Arrange for someone to drive you if you are unwell or sedation is used, and have soft foods ready at home for recovery.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Often, yes, but sometimes infection is treated first. The dentist will decide based on swelling, your health and how well the area can be numbed. Follow their advice about timing.
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth. You should feel pressure but not sharp pain. Soreness after the procedure is normal and usually manageable with recommended pain relief.
Ask the dentist whether a root canal or other repair is realistic. Sometimes saving the tooth is possible; other times removal is safer. Understanding the options helps you decide.
Choose soft, cool or lukewarm foods such as yogurt, soup or mashed potatoes. Avoid crunchy, spicy or very hot foods and chew on the other side until the area heals.
Depending on the location, the dentist may discuss implants, bridges or dentures once healing is underway. Some teeth, like wisdom teeth, usually do not need replacing.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal may be the safest choice. St. Williams patients can learn how extractions are planned and how healing is supported in Port Dover.
A focused emergency exam aims to find the source of sudden pain, swelling or damage. St. Williams patients can learn what this Port Dover visit usually involves.
