When a tooth has to come out quickly

An urgent extraction removes a source of pain or infection when repair is not realistic.

Sometimes a tooth is so badly broken, decayed or infected that saving it is not practical, and leaving it in place risks more pain or spreading infection. An emergency extraction removes the tooth so the area can begin to heal. It is not always the first choice, and the dentist will discuss whether any alternatives exist before going ahead.

If a Renton patient has severe pain, a split tooth or swelling linked to a failing tooth, the first step is to call our Port Dover office. The team will listen to the symptoms, advise on interim care and discuss how soon an assessment can happen. Whether removal is needed will be decided only after examination.

When removal is urgent

Extraction is recommended when keeping the tooth carries more risk.

Situations that may need prompt extraction

Typical reasons include a tooth fractured below the gumline, severe decay that leaves too little structure to restore, an infection that cannot be controlled with other treatment, a tooth loosened beyond recovery by gum disease or trauma and an impacted wisdom tooth causing significant pain or infection. In each case, the dentist will explain the reasoning using exam findings and X-rays.

Alternatives the dentist may consider

Root canal treatment, crown lengthening or other repairs can sometimes save a tooth that seems lost. The dentist will discuss whether these options are realistic for your tooth, their likely outcomes and how they compare with extraction. If saving the tooth would be uncertain or very involved, removal may still be the more practical choice for you.

Getting ready

A few details help keep the extraction safe.

  • Health information to share

Tell the dentist about all medications, especially blood thinners, as well as diabetes, heart conditions, bleeding disorders, past radiation to the jaw and bone medications such as bisphosphonates. Some may require coordination with your physician before the procedure. Mention allergies to medications or latex. Do not stop any prescribed medicine without first talking with the doctor who prescribed it.

  • Practical arrangements

Plan to rest after the extraction. If sedation is used, you will need someone to drive you home. Have soft foods, gauze and a cold pack ready. Renton patients may want to think about the drive back and arrange support for the evening, particularly if they live alone or have heavy work planned for the following day.

The procedure

The dentist explains each step and checks your comfort.

  1. Numbing and removing the tooth

Local anaesthetic is used to numb the tooth and surrounding area. If there is active infection, the dentist may first address it to improve comfort and numbing. The tooth is gently loosened and removed. Pressure is normal, but sharp pain is not; tell the dentist if you feel any. Some teeth need to be sectioned or removed surgically, which will be explained beforehand.

  2. Controlling bleeding

After removal, gauze is placed over the socket and you bite down to encourage clotting. Stitches may be used if needed. You will receive instructions on bleeding control, pain management and diet. Antibiotics may be prescribed in certain situations, such as when infection has spread beyond the tooth, but not routinely for every extraction performed.

Healing

Careful aftercare helps the socket heal smoothly.

The first days

Rest, keep your head elevated and avoid spitting, using straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing for the time advised, since these can dislodge the clot. Eat soft foods on the other side. Use pain relief as directed. Call the office if bleeding persists, swelling increases after a few days, fever develops or pain suddenly worsens, which may signal a dry socket or infection.

Planning for the gap

Once healing is underway, consider whether to replace the tooth. Gaps can allow neighbouring teeth to shift and may affect chewing. Implants, bridges and partial dentures are common options. The dentist will discuss timing and suitability at a follow-up visit. Replacement is usually not needed for a removed wisdom tooth. There is no rush to decide on the others.

Emergency extraction questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Can an infected tooth be pulled right away?

Often it can, though sometimes infection is managed first to improve comfort and healing. The dentist will decide based on the severity of the infection, your health and the tooth involved, and will explain the reasoning before proceeding.

Will it hurt?

Local anaesthetic numbs the area, so most people feel pressure rather than pain during removal. Some soreness afterward is common and can usually be managed with recommended pain relief. Tell the dentist immediately if you feel sharp pain during the procedure.

How do I know if I have a dry socket?

A dry socket often causes increasing, throbbing pain a few days after extraction, sometimes with a bad taste or visible bone in the socket. Call the office if you notice these signs so the area can be checked and treated.

Do I need antibiotics after an extraction?

Not always. Antibiotics are prescribed when there is a specific reason, such as spreading infection or certain medical conditions. The dentist will advise based on your situation. Take any prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and finish the course.

When can I replace the missing tooth?

Timing depends on the replacement option and how the area heals. Some options can be planned within weeks, while implants often require months of healing first. The dentist will discuss the timing that suits your mouth and preferences.
