An emergency extraction may be recommended when a tooth is shattered below the gumline, severely infected and unrestorable, or causing pain that cannot be relieved another way. Removing the source can end the immediate problem, but it also creates a gap and a healing site that need care. Understanding the reasons and alternatives helps even under pressure.
If you are at Long Point with severe tooth pain or a badly damaged tooth, call our Port Dover office. The team can discuss your symptoms and whether an urgent assessment is appropriate.

When it is needed
Common reasons include a tooth split down the root, decay that has destroyed most of the crown, advanced infection with bone loss or an impacted wisdom tooth causing swelling and pain. Sometimes a tooth is severely loose after trauma or gum disease. X-rays help the dentist evaluate whether the tooth can be kept.
Even in an emergency, ask whether root canal treatment or other care could save the tooth and what the outlook would be. In some cases, the tooth can be stabilized while you decide. The dentist will explain the options so your choice is informed rather than rushed.
Preparing
Tell the dentist about blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions, bisphosphonate medications, allergies and recent illnesses. Infection may need to be managed before or after removal. Do not stop prescribed medications without advice. The dentist may coordinate with your physician if needed.
Arrange for someone to drive you if sedation is used or if you feel unwell. Plan soft foods for the next few days. Visitors staying at a cottage may want to make sure they have supplies such as gauze, cold packs and soft meals before heading back from the appointment.
The procedure
The area is numbed so you feel pressure rather than pain. Infection can make freezing less effective, so the dentist may take extra time or use additional techniques. Simple extractions remove the tooth whole, while surgical extractions may require sectioning or a small incision.
Gauze is placed to control bleeding and help a clot form. Stitches may be used. You will receive written instructions about pain relief, rinsing and eating. Ask questions before leaving, especially if you are unsure how to care for the site at home.
Recovery
Avoid spitting, straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing as instructed so the clot stays in place. Eat soft foods and chew on the other side. Some swelling and discomfort are normal. Call the office if bleeding continues, pain increases after a few days or swelling worsens.
Once healing is underway, discuss whether to replace the tooth with an implant, bridge or partial denture. Visitors can request records to share with their home dentist. Planning replacement helps prevent shifting teeth and supports chewing.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 and describe the tooth, pain and any swelling. The team will discuss urgency and whether an assessment can be arranged soon.
Bring a complete medication list, and plan for a ride home and a quiet rest of the day after any extraction.

Sometimes. In other cases, infection may need to be controlled first because freezing can be less effective. The dentist will assess and explain the safest approach for your situation.
Antibiotics may be prescribed for spreading infection or certain health conditions, but they are not always necessary. The dentist decides based on your symptoms, the infection and your medical history.
Soreness and swelling are common for a few days and usually manageable with recommended pain relief. Pain that worsens after several days may signal dry socket and should be reported.
Rest is recommended for the first day. Avoid strenuous activity, swimming and alcohol until advised. Protect the site from irritation and follow your aftercare instructions closely.
Many teeth benefit from replacement to maintain chewing and prevent shifting. The dentist can discuss implants, bridges or partial dentures once the area has healed sufficiently.
When a tooth cannot be saved, removal can be planned with care. Long Point patients can learn about extraction, healing and replacement at our Port Dover office.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: pain, swelling or damage. Long Point residents and visitors can call our Port Dover office to arrange one.
