Seeing Jarvis patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Jarvis patientsUrgent removal, carefully decided
An emergency extraction may be recommended when a tooth is fractured beyond repair, severely infected, extremely loose or causing pain that other treatments cannot resolve. Removing it can relieve pain and stop infection from spreading. Even under urgent circumstances, the dentist will explain why extraction is the recommendation and what alternatives exist.
Anyone in Jarvis with a tooth that suddenly can’t be saved should call our Port Dover office first. The team will review symptoms, discuss availability and help you prepare for a possible extraction.

When it is needed
A tooth split down to the root, decay that has destroyed most of the tooth, an abscess that cannot be treated with root canal therapy, a painful partially erupted wisdom tooth or a tooth loosened by injury or gum disease may need urgent removal. The dentist uses an exam and X-rays to confirm this.
In some cases, root canal treatment, a crown or a different approach might save the tooth. Ask about these options, their likelihood of success and the time and cost involved. When the tooth genuinely cannot be saved, understanding why helps you feel confident about the decision.
Preparation
Tell the team about blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions, bone medications, allergies and any recent illness. These affect how the extraction is planned and whether precautions or a physician’s input are needed. Do not stop prescribed medicines without guidance from your doctor or dentist.
If possible, eat something light beforehand unless told otherwise. Arrange a ride home if you may be given sedation or if you feel unwell. Plan to rest for the remainder of the day and have soft foods and any recommended pain relief ready at home.
The procedure
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area. Infection can sometimes make freezing less effective, so let the dentist know if you still feel sharp pain. The tooth is loosened and removed, sometimes in sections. You will feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain during the extraction.
If there is significant infection, the dentist may drain the area, prescribe antibiotics or both. In some cases, antibiotics may be given first and the extraction scheduled shortly afterward. Complex extractions may be referred to an oral surgeon. The dentist will explain the plan.
Recovery
Bite on gauze as instructed, avoid spitting, straws and smoking, and eat soft foods for a few days. Use cold compresses and pain relief as directed. Call the office if bleeding persists, pain increases after a few days or swelling worsens. Seek emergency care for breathing or swallowing difficulties.
Once the area heals, you can discuss whether the tooth should be replaced with an implant, bridge or partial denture. Wisdom teeth usually do not need replacement. Schedule a follow-up visit to review healing and plan any next steps for your oral health.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as early as you can. Explain your pain, swelling and any fever so the team can discuss urgency, availability and preparation.
Have a driver available if needed, bring your medication list and plan for rest and soft foods after the appointment.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Often, yes, but sometimes antibiotics are given first to control severe infection or improve freezing. The dentist will decide based on your symptoms and health.
Infection can make anaesthetic less effective. The dentist may use additional techniques. Tell them if you feel sharp pain so they can adjust.
Sometimes. Root canal treatment or a crown may save the tooth. The dentist will explain whether these are viable for your situation and the likely outcomes.
Discomfort is usually greatest in the first few days and gradually eases. Follow aftercare instructions. Increasing pain after several days should be reported to the office.
Bite firmly on fresh gauze for a sustained period. If bleeding continues heavily, call the office. If it is uncontrolled or you feel faint, seek emergency medical care.
When a tooth cannot be saved, a planned extraction can relieve pain and protect your health. Read how removal, healing and replacement are discussed for Jarvis patients.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: finding the cause of pain, swelling or damage and relieving it. See what the visit involves for patients from Jarvis.
