Dental emergencies range from a lost filling that feels sharp to an infection that is causing swelling and fever. Some can wait a day or two with careful home care, while others need same-day attention or a trip to hospital. Understanding the difference helps you act quickly and appropriately, especially when you live some distance from a dental office.
Residents of Walsingham can call our Port Dover office when a dental problem arises. The team will ask about symptoms, advise on urgency and offer the next available appropriate appointment. When the situation calls for emergency medical care rather than dental care, they will tell you so directly.

Is it urgent?
Severe pain, swelling in the face or gums, a knocked-out or displaced adult tooth, bleeding that continues after pressure and signs of infection such as fever all need prompt attention. Call the office as soon as possible. If swelling affects breathing, swallowing or the eye, go to an emergency department right away.
A small chip without pain, a lost filling that is not sore or a loose crown that is still in place may be less urgent. These still need dental care, but home measures can often keep you comfortable until an appointment. When you are unsure, call and describe the problem so the team can advise you.
First aid at home
Rinse with warm salt water, use a cold compress on the outside of the face for short periods and take over-the-counter pain relief as directed if it is safe for you. Avoid very hot, cold or sweet foods. Do not apply heat to swelling or place aspirin directly on the gum, which can burn the tissue.
Save broken pieces of tooth or restorations and bring them in. Cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum. A loose crown can sometimes be held in place temporarily with dental cement from a pharmacy, but do not use household glue. Avoid chewing on the affected side.
At the appointment
The dentist examines the problem area, asks about your symptoms and often takes an X-ray. Tests such as tapping, cold checks or bite tests help identify the cause. This allows the dentist to explain what is happening and how urgent treatment is, so you can make informed decisions.
Emergency treatment may include starting a root canal, placing a temporary filling, smoothing a broken tooth, recementing a crown, draining an abscess or removing a tooth. Medication may be prescribed when appropriate. If more treatment is needed, the dentist will outline the next steps and timing.
Preventing repeats
Temporary fixes are designed to hold for a short time. Keep the follow-up appointment for permanent treatment, even if the pain has gone. Infection and cracks can worsen quietly. Completing care as planned gives the tooth the best chance of lasting and reduces the risk of another urgent visit.
Regular checkups find small problems before they turn into emergencies. Wear a mouthguard for sports and a night guard if you grind your teeth. Avoid chewing ice and hard candies. If you notice a sensitive or sore tooth, book an appointment early rather than waiting for it to become severe.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office before heading out. Describe your symptoms and any injury so the team can advise on urgency and current availability. If the problem is a medical emergency, go to hospital first.
Bring a list of medications and allergies, any recovered tooth fragments or restorations, and details of recent dental work elsewhere.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
For most toothaches, call the dental office. Go to hospital if there is swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, high fever, swelling near the eye or a serious injury. Hospitals can manage medical emergencies but usually cannot provide full dental treatment.
It depends on availability and the urgency of the problem. Call as early as possible. The team will discuss the next appropriate appointment and what to do until then.
Pain that stops does not always mean the problem is solved. An infected nerve may stop hurting as it dies. Book an exam to have the tooth checked.
Only if the dentist determines they are needed, usually for spreading infection. Antibiotics do not replace dental treatment that removes the source of the problem.
Severe pain, swelling, infection, knocked-out or loose teeth after injury, broken teeth with pain and uncontrolled bleeding are common examples. If you are unsure, call and describe the situation.
An emergency dental exam focuses on finding the cause of sudden pain, swelling or damage. Walsingham patients can learn what it involves and what the visit may not include.
