Caring for Turkey Point patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for Turkey PointUrgent problems, clear next steps
A dental emergency might be severe tooth pain, a swollen face, a broken tooth, a lost crown or an injury from a fall. Some of these need attention within hours, while others can safely wait a short time with home care. Knowing the difference helps you act quickly when it matters and avoid unnecessary worry when it does not.
Turkey Point fills up with cottagers and beach visitors in summer, and dental problems do not take holidays. Anyone in the area can call our Port Dover office to describe an urgent concern and get advice about next steps and timing.

Is it an emergency
Rapidly spreading swelling of the face or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding and significant head injuries are medical emergencies. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Dental care can follow once you are medically stable. Do not wait for a dental appointment in these situations.
Severe or persistent toothache, swelling of the gum, a knocked-out or loosened adult tooth, a broken tooth with pain and a lost crown or filling exposing a sensitive tooth should be reported to the dental office promptly. Mild sensitivity or a small chip without pain may be able to wait for a regular appointment.
What to do now
Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food. A cold compress on the cheek can reduce swelling. Use over-the-counter pain relief only as directed and if safe for you. Avoid placing aspirin on the gum. Keep your head elevated if pain is worse when lying down.
Save broken tooth pieces in milk or water. A knocked-out adult tooth should be handled by the crown, kept moist in milk and brought to a dentist as quickly as possible. If a crown comes off, keep it safe; do not use household glue. Avoid chewing on the affected side.
At the office
The dentist examines the area, asks about your symptoms and may take X-rays. They look for infection, cracks, decay, injury and loose restorations. Your medical history and medications are reviewed. The dentist will explain what they find and the options available for treating it.
Treatment may begin immediately to relieve pain or stabilize the tooth, or a temporary measure may be placed until definitive treatment can be arranged. You will receive instructions for home care. Ask how soon follow-up is needed and what symptoms should prompt you to call back.
Avoiding the next one
Regular checkups find cavities, cracks and failing fillings before they become painful. Treating small problems early is usually simpler. Wearing a mouthguard for sports and a night guard if you grind also reduces the risk of breakage. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using your teeth as tools.
If you spend summers in Turkey Point and have a regular dentist elsewhere, consider a checkup before the season starts. Bring the contact details of your home dentist and a medication list with you. Knowing where to call ahead of time makes it easier to act quickly if something happens.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office and describe the pain, swelling or injury. The team will help determine how urgently you should be seen and what to bring.
If you are a visitor, have your home dentist’s information on hand. For life-threatening symptoms, call 911 instead.
