Every dental service for Silver HillHelp when something goes wrong
Dental emergencies rarely arrive at a convenient moment. A tooth can crack over dinner, a filling can fall out on a weekend, or a child can take a tumble off a bike. Pain, swelling, broken or knocked-out teeth and infections all fall under emergency dentistry. The right response depends on the symptoms and how quickly they are changing.
From a rural hamlet like Silver Hill, it is worth phoning before getting in the car. Our Port Dover team can help you judge urgency, explain what to do in the meantime and discuss when you can be seen. Situations affecting breathing, swallowing or consciousness need emergency medical care first.

Is it an emergency
Severe or persistent tooth pain, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out or displaced adult tooth, a broken tooth with sharp pain and bleeding after a dental procedure that does not ease with pressure are reasons to call the dental office promptly. Lost crowns and fillings can often wait a little but should still be reported.
Rapidly spreading facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a high fever with dental swelling, heavy bleeding that will not stop, a possible jaw fracture or a serious head injury need emergency medical care. In these situations, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital rather than waiting for a dental opening.
While you wait
Rinse gently with warm water or salt water, and use a cold compress on the cheek for swelling. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you, following the label. Avoid placing tablets directly on the gums. Keep your head elevated when resting if pain is throbbing.
Save any broken pieces of tooth or a dislodged crown and bring them with you. Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or dental wax. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown and keep it moist in milk or try to place it back in the socket while you seek help.
At the appointment
The dentist examines the affected area and usually takes X-rays to find the cause of pain or swelling. You will be asked about your symptoms, medical history and any recent injuries. This helps determine whether the problem involves decay, a crack, an infection or damage to the nerve or surrounding bone.
Treatment may include draining an infection, placing a temporary filling, recementing a crown, smoothing a broken edge or beginning root canal therapy. Sometimes an extraction is recommended. The dentist will explain what can be done during the visit and what further treatment may be needed.
After the emergency
Temporary solutions are designed to bridge the gap until permanent treatment. Keep follow-up appointments for root canals, crowns or other repairs. Report any new or increasing pain, swelling or fever. Following aftercare instructions closely reduces the risk of complications. If a temporary filling or crown comes loose before the next visit, call rather than leaving the tooth exposed.
Regular checkups help find problems like deep decay or cracked fillings before they turn into emergencies. Mouthguards for sports and night guards for grinding offer protection. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using your teeth as tools. Small precautions can prevent many urgent visits and a long drive on a bad day.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as a dental emergency happens. The team will ask about your symptoms and help you decide on the safest next step, including whether to come in.
Bring any tooth fragments, a list of medications and a driver if you are in severe pain. Head to the hospital first for life-threatening symptoms.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Severe pain, swelling, infection, knocked-out or broken teeth and bleeding that does not stop are common examples. If you are unsure, call the office and describe your symptoms so the team can help you decide.
If swelling is spreading quickly, affects your eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek emergency medical care immediately. For milder swelling, call the dental office promptly.
Some problems can wait a short time with appropriate care, while others cannot. Describe your symptoms to the office or seek medical advice. Worsening pain, swelling or fever should not be ignored.
Not necessarily. Many teeth can be saved with treatment such as a root canal or repair. If extraction is recommended, the dentist will explain why and discuss replacement options for later.
Regular checkups, good home care, wearing mouthguards during sports and avoiding hard foods or using your teeth as tools can reduce the risk. Addressing small problems early prevents many emergencies.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: pain, swelling, a break or a lost filling. Silver Hill patients can learn what it covers and what to tell us.
When a dental problem cannot wait, call early. Silver Hill patients can learn how same-day requests are handled, what to share by phone and when to go to ER.
