Dental emergencies include severe or persistent toothache, facial swelling, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost fillings or crowns that leave a tooth painful, and injuries to the mouth. Some are true emergencies needing same-day attention, while others can wait a short time with proper care. Knowing the difference helps you act appropriately.
Pine Grove residents facing a dental emergency should call our Port Dover office first. Describing your symptoms lets the team judge how soon you need to be seen and give advice for managing in the meantime.

Judge the urgency
Swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, difficulty breathing or swallowing, high fever with facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding and head injuries require emergency medical care right away. Do not wait for a dental appointment or online reply in these cases. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Severe toothache, a knocked-out permanent tooth, a tooth pushed out of position, a large break, swelling without breathing problems and pain after a lost filling or crown all deserve a prompt call to the dental office. The team can help determine how soon you should be seen.
First aid
Rinse with warm water, gently floss to remove trapped food and take over-the-counter pain relief if safe for you, following label directions. A cold compress outside the cheek can help swelling. Avoid heat on the face and never place pain tablets against the gum. Note when the pain started and what triggers it.
For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, keep it moist in milk or saliva and call immediately. For broken teeth, save the pieces and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum. Apply gentle pressure with gauze to bleeding. Avoid chewing on the affected side until seen.
At the visit
The dentist will ask about your symptoms, examine the area and usually take X-rays to find the cause. Tests for temperature sensitivity, tapping and biting help locate the problem tooth. The dentist will then explain what is wrong and what can be done, including any limits on what can be completed on the day.
Treatment may include a temporary filling, smoothing or bonding a broken edge, starting a root canal, draining an infection, splinting a loose tooth or removing a tooth that cannot be saved. Follow-up appointments are common. Ask what each option involves and what happens if you choose to delay.
Prevention
Regular checkups catch cavities, cracked teeth and failing fillings before they cause severe pain or infection. Do not ignore early warning signs like lingering sensitivity, a rough edge or a mild ache. Calling at that stage often means simpler treatment and avoids an urgent visit later.
Wear a mouthguard during sports and activities with a risk of falls. Avoid chewing ice, hard candy or using teeth to open packaging. If you grind your teeth, ask about a night guard. These steps lower the chance of broken teeth and other injuries that lead to emergency care.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office at 519-583-2929 as soon as you can. Explain your symptoms so the team can assess urgency and discuss the next available appointment.
If symptoms suggest a medical emergency, go to the hospital first. Otherwise bring your medication list and any tooth fragments to the visit.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding and injuries to the mouth are common examples. If you are unsure, call the office and describe your symptoms so the team can help you judge urgency.
Go to the hospital for breathing or swallowing problems, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or serious head injuries. For most tooth pain, damage or infection without those signs, call the dental office first.
Availability depends on the schedule and the urgency of your problem. Call as early as possible and describe your symptoms. The team will discuss the next appropriate appointment and how to manage until then.
If the office is closed, listen to any recorded instructions. For medical emergency signs, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. For other urgent concerns, call the office as soon as it reopens.
Sometimes, but often the first visit focuses on relieving pain and stabilizing the problem, with further treatment scheduled later. The dentist will explain the full plan and what to watch for in the meantime.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: finding the cause and easing pain. Pine Grove patients can see what is assessed and what to bring along.
