Dental emergencies include severe toothache, facial swelling, broken or knocked-out teeth, lost fillings with sharp edges and bleeding that will not settle. Some need attention within hours, others can wait a day or two with proper interim care. Recognising the difference and calling for advice helps you get the right care at the right time.
For Peacock Point residents and visitors spending time at the lake, emergency dental care is provided at our Port Dover office. Call first to describe the problem, so the team can assess urgency, offer advice and discuss when you can be seen.

Is it urgent?
Severe pain that does not respond to over-the-counter relief, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out permanent tooth, a broken tooth with pain or a dental injury from a fall usually need prompt dental assessment. A lost filling or crown without pain may be less urgent but should still be addressed soon to protect the tooth.
Go to the hospital or call 911 for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, swelling near the eye, high fever with facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious head injury. These can be signs of life-threatening problems. Dental care can follow once you are medically stable.
Interim care
Take over-the-counter pain relief if it is safe for you, following package directions. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face for swelling. Rinse gently with warm salt water. Keep your head elevated when lying down. Avoid heat on the face and do not place aspirin directly on the gums or tooth.
If a tooth is broken, save any fragments and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum. For a lost crown, keep it safe and bring it with you. A knocked-out permanent tooth should be replanted if possible or stored in milk, and you should seek care immediately.
At the office
The dentist examines the area, asks about your symptoms and usually takes X-rays. Identifying the exact cause, whether a cracked tooth, infection, exposed nerve or injury, guides treatment. Bring a list of medications and allergies, and describe any recent dental work, since it may be related to the current problem.
Treatment may involve draining infection, beginning root canal therapy, placing a temporary filling, recementing a crown, splinting a loose tooth or extraction. Sometimes a prescription is provided. The dentist will explain what was done and what further treatment is recommended to resolve the problem fully.
Next steps
Emergency treatment often stabilises a problem rather than completing care. A temporary filling may need a permanent restoration, or a started root canal may need finishing. Book follow-up appointments promptly. If you will be leaving Peacock Point soon, ask for records to share with your regular dentist.
Regular checkups can catch cracks, deep decay and failing fillings before they cause emergencies. Wear a mouthguard for sports, avoid chewing ice and hard objects and treat early symptoms promptly. Keep the office number handy, especially during summer when you may be farther from your usual routine.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as a dental emergency occurs. Describe your symptoms so the team can advise on urgency, interim care and availability. Go to hospital first for breathing or swallowing problems.
Bring any tooth fragments, a lost crown or a knocked-out tooth in milk, plus your medication list.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Call the office to find out about availability and any after-hours guidance. If you have swelling affecting breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or a serious injury, go to the nearest emergency department immediately.
Hospitals can manage serious infections, injuries and pain, but they usually cannot provide dental treatment such as fillings or root canals. You will likely need to follow up with a dentist to address the cause.
As quickly as possible. A permanent tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is replanted or stored in milk and treated promptly. Do not replant a baby tooth. Call the office immediately.
It may not be urgent if there is no pain, but the tooth is more vulnerable. Keep it clean and avoid chewing on it. Call the office to arrange an appointment soon, especially if sensitivity develops.
Yes, you can call to discuss an urgent problem. Let the team know if you have a regular dentist elsewhere, so records can be shared and follow-up care can be coordinated with them.
