A dental emergency is any problem that needs prompt attention to relieve severe pain, control infection, stop bleeding or save a tooth. Examples include a knocked-out adult tooth, a badly broken tooth, a severe toothache, facial swelling, a lost crown with exposed nerve or bleeding after an extraction. Some situations are medical emergencies first and need hospital care.
With cottages filling up in summer and residents there year-round, problems can arise at any point. Long Point patients and visitors can call our Port Dover office to discuss symptoms and arrange urgent assessment as availability allows.

Is it urgent?
Call promptly for a knocked-out or displaced adult tooth, severe or worsening pain, swelling in the gum or face, a tooth broken with sharp pain, bleeding that will not slow, or signs of infection like fever and a bad taste. These problems are more likely to worsen or affect outcomes if delayed.
A small chip without pain, a lost filling without sensitivity or a minor denture issue may be less urgent, though still worth calling about. The team can help you judge timing. If you are unsure, describe your symptoms and let the office help decide the next step.
While you wait
Rinse with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek and use over-the-counter pain relief as directed by a pharmacist or physician. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum. Keep your head elevated if swelling is present, and avoid very hot or cold foods.
Save any broken pieces or knocked-out teeth. Keep a knocked-out adult tooth moist in milk. Cover sharp edges with dental wax. If a crown falls off, keep it safe and bring it along. Avoid chewing on the affected side until it has been examined.
At the office
The dentist examines the area, takes X-rays as needed and identifies the cause. You will hear what is happening and what options exist. Freezing is used for procedures, and comfort is checked throughout. If you are anxious, tell the team so they can explain each step.
Treatment may relieve pain, remove infection, repair damage temporarily or remove a tooth that cannot be saved. Follow-up care may be needed to complete treatment. Visitors can ask for records and guidance on continuing care with their home dentist.
After urgent care
Follow aftercare instructions about medications, diet and cleaning. Take any prescription exactly as directed. Keep follow-up appointments, especially for temporary fillings or partially completed root canals, since these are not designed to last long term.
Regular checkups catch problems before they become emergencies. Wear mouthguards for sports, avoid chewing ice and hard candy and do not ignore early warning signs such as sensitivity or bleeding gums. Prevention is usually easier than urgent repair.

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Severe pain, facial swelling, a knocked-out adult tooth, a badly broken tooth, uncontrolled bleeding or signs of infection are common examples. If you are unsure, call and describe your symptoms.
Most toothaches are best assessed by a dentist. Go to the hospital if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, high fever or a serious injury.
Yes. Visitors can call to describe their concern. The team will discuss options based on availability and urgency. Bring details of your regular dentist so records can be shared if helpful.
Same-day care depends on the schedule and clinical need. Calling early helps. The team will discuss the next appropriate appointment and guide you on managing symptoms in the meantime.
Bring a medication list, any tooth fragments or loose restorations, identification and insurance details if you have coverage. Information about recent dental work is also helpful.
An emergency exam focuses on one urgent problem: pain, swelling or damage. Long Point residents and visitors can call our Port Dover office to arrange one.
