Dental emergencies range from a throbbing toothache that keeps you awake to a tooth broken in a fall or swelling that appears overnight. Some need same-day attention, some can wait a day or two with careful management, and a few are true medical emergencies that belong in a hospital. Working out which situation you are facing is the first and most useful step.
If you are in Hillcrest and facing a dental emergency, call our Port Dover office. The team will listen to what has happened, help you judge the urgency and either arrange an appropriate appointment or direct you to emergency medical services when warning signs suggest that is the safer choice.

Is it an emergency?
Severe or persistent pain, swelling of the face or gums, a knocked-out adult tooth, a broken tooth with pain or bleeding, a lost crown exposing a sensitive tooth and bleeding after an extraction are all reasons to call promptly. A small chip or a slightly rough filling without pain may be less urgent, but it should still be checked before it turns into a bigger problem.
Go directly to an emergency department for difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling that spreads rapidly, bleeding that will not stop, a high fever with facial swelling or a serious head injury. These situations need medical care first. Dental treatment can follow once the person is stable, and the dental team can help arrange that follow-up when the time comes.
First aid
Rinse with warm water, floss gently to remove any trapped food and use over-the-counter pain relief if it is safe for you, following the label. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face for swelling. Avoid putting heat on the face or aspirin on the gums. Keeping your head raised when you rest can also ease throbbing pain overnight.
Save any broken pieces and rinse the mouth gently. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty and replant it if you can, or store it in milk, then seek care right away. Do not replant baby teeth. A sharp edge can be covered temporarily with dental wax or a piece of sugar-free gum.
At the office
The dentist examines the affected area, asks about your symptoms and often takes X-rays to pinpoint the cause. Infections, fractures, deep decay and injuries each call for a different approach, so finding the source matters. The dentist will explain what they have found, how urgent further treatment is and what the options are before anything is done.
Immediate care may include starting a root canal, draining an abscess, placing a temporary filling or crown, splinting loose teeth or removing a tooth that cannot be saved. Sometimes temporary treatment is used to stabilize the problem and relieve pain until a longer appointment can be arranged to finish the work properly and protect the tooth.
Follow-up
Temporary measures are not meant to be long-term solutions. Book and keep your follow-up appointments to complete treatment, such as finishing a root canal or placing a permanent crown. Call the office if symptoms return or get worse, and take any prescribed medication exactly as directed. Leaving temporary work in place too long can lead to new problems.
Regular checkups, prompt treatment of small problems, mouthguards for sport and avoiding chewing ice or hard objects all reduce the likelihood of future emergencies. Many urgent dental problems start as minor issues that went unnoticed or were put off. Preventive care remains one of the most effective ways to avoid an unexpected and painful crisis.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as a dental emergency arises. Describe the symptoms, when they started and any injury involved. The team will advise on first steps and the earliest appropriate appointment, or direct you to hospital if needed.
Same-day availability depends on the schedule and the nature of the problem, so calling as early in the day as possible can help.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Severe pain, swelling, knocked-out or broken teeth, bleeding that will not stop and signs of infection are common examples. If you are unsure whether your problem qualifies, call the office and describe it so the team can help you decide how quickly to act.
Go to hospital for breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly spreading swelling or a serious injury. Most other dental problems are best treated by a dentist, who can address the cause directly, so call the dental office first in those cases.
Let the team know you are new when you call. They will explain how urgent appointments are handled for new patients, what information they will need from you and what to bring along to the visit, such as a medication list.
Follow any after-hours instructions provided by the office on its voicemail or website. For a medical emergency, such as swelling affecting breathing, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department straight away rather than waiting.
Some issues can be resolved at the first visit, while others need temporary relief followed by one or more further appointments. The dentist will explain the plan, the expected timeline and what you should watch for between visits.
An emergency dental exam focuses on one urgent problem such as pain, swelling or damage. Hillcrest patients can learn what to expect at our Port Dover office.
