When it cannot wait

Knowing what counts as urgent helps you act at the right speed.

Dental emergencies range from a nagging ache that suddenly becomes severe to a tooth knocked out in an accident. Some need attention within hours, others within a day or two, and a few require a hospital rather than a dental office. Understanding the difference helps you get the right care without unnecessary delay or worry.

For people in Boston, urgent dental care is provided at our Port Dover office. Call as soon as you can, describe what is happening, and the team will advise on how quickly you should be seen, what to do in the meantime and whether you need medical care first.

What is urgent

Some problems need hours, others can wait a day.

  • Situations that need prompt dental care

Severe tooth pain, a knocked-out adult tooth, a tooth pushed out of place, swelling of the gum or face, a broken tooth with exposed nerve and bleeding that continues after an extraction are reasons to call the office promptly. Describe your symptoms clearly so the team can judge urgency and suggest what to do before you arrive.

  • When to go to hospital first

Trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling spreading toward the eye or down the neck, a high fever with facial swelling, a suspected broken jaw or a head injury need emergency medical care. Go to a hospital or call 911. Dental treatment can follow once the immediate medical risk has been addressed. If you are unsure which applies, err on the side of the hospital.

Immediate steps

Simple measures can help while you arrange care.

  1. Pain and swelling

Rinse gently with warm salt water and floss carefully to remove any trapped food. Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you; follow the directions. A cold compress on the outside of the face can reduce swelling. Avoid heat on a swollen area and never place tablets directly on the gum or tooth.

  2. Injuries and broken teeth

For a knocked-out tooth, handle it by the crown and keep it moist in milk. Save broken pieces of tooth. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax. If a crown has come off, keep it safe and avoid chewing on that side. Bring everything with you to the appointment in a small sealed container.

Assessment and care

The dentist aims to relieve symptoms and plan a lasting fix.

Finding the cause

The dentist will examine the area, ask about your symptoms and often take x-rays. This helps determine whether the cause is decay, infection, a crack, an injury or something else. Accurate diagnosis matters, since similar symptoms can have different causes needing different treatments. Describe when the problem started, what makes it worse and anything you have already tried at home.

Treatment options

Depending on the cause, treatment might include draining an abscess, placing a temporary filling, starting root canal treatment, repositioning a tooth or extraction. Sometimes treatment is staged over more than one visit. The dentist will explain what is being done now, what remains and why. Ask how you should expect to feel over the next day or two.

Afterward

Follow-through makes the emergency less likely to return.

Home care after urgent treatment

Follow the dentist’s instructions on pain relief, eating and keeping the area clean. If antibiotics are prescribed, take the full course as directed. Contact the office if pain worsens, swelling increases or new symptoms appear. Keep scheduled follow-up appointments even if you feel better, since temporary fixes are not designed to last for long or carry full chewing forces.

Preventing future emergencies

Many emergencies stem from problems that develop slowly, such as decay or cracked fillings. Regular checkups help catch these early. Mouthguards for sports, avoiding chewing ice or hard objects and treating small issues promptly can all reduce the chance of an urgent visit in the future. Keep the office number somewhere easy to find at home.

Emergency dentistry questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out or loosened tooth, a broken tooth with sharp pain and bleeding after an extraction are common examples. If you are unsure, call the office and describe your symptoms so the team can advise you.

When should I go to the hospital instead?

Go to a hospital or call 911 for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, a high fever with facial swelling, a serious head or jaw injury or uncontrolled bleeding. Dental care can follow once you are safe.

Can I take pain medication before my visit?

Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you. Follow package directions and check with a pharmacist if you have health conditions. Let the dentist know what you have taken and at what time.

Will my emergency be fixed in one visit?

Some problems can be resolved quickly, while others need follow-up appointments. The dentist will focus on relieving symptoms first and then explain the plan for completing treatment, including how many further visits are likely and what each will involve.

What should I do if a crown falls off?

Keep the crown safe and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side. Do not use household glue to reattach it. The dentist can check the tooth and the crown to see whether it can be recemented.
