Caring for Bloomsburg patients at our office in Port Dover
See every dental service for BloomsburgWhen something cannot wait
Dental emergencies come in many forms: a throbbing toothache that keeps you awake, a swollen jaw, a tooth broken on a hard bite, a crown that falls off or a knocked-out tooth after a fall. Some situations need same-day attention, while others can safely wait a short time. Knowing how to judge urgency helps you act appropriately.
Bloomsburg residents with an urgent dental concern can call our Port Dover office for guidance. The team listens to your symptoms, explains how soon you should be seen and what to do in the meantime, and arranges the most appropriate appointment that current availability allows.

Is it urgent?
Severe or worsening pain, swelling in the gum or face, a knocked-out or badly displaced adult tooth, a tooth broken with sharp pain, or bleeding that continues after an extraction are reasons to call promptly. A lost filling or chipped tooth without pain is often less urgent but still worth booking soon, before further damage occurs.
If swelling affects breathing or swallowing, spreads quickly or reaches the eye, or if there is a serious head injury or uncontrolled bleeding, go to a hospital emergency department or call 911. These situations need immediate medical care. A dental appointment can follow once the more serious concern has been addressed safely by the hospital team.
While you wait
Over-the-counter pain relief taken as directed may help, provided it is safe for you. A cold compress on the outside of the face can reduce swelling. Avoid placing aspirin or other medications directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue. Keep your head elevated when lying down if throbbing pain is worse at night.
For a broken tooth or lost restoration, avoid chewing on that side. Dental wax or sugar-free gum can cover a sharp edge temporarily. Keep any broken pieces or a dislodged crown in a clean container. If a tooth has been knocked out, handle it by the crown and keep it moist in milk while calling the office.
The appointment
The dentist reviews your symptoms and history, examines the area and often takes X-rays to identify the cause. Treatment may include easing pain, draining infection, placing a temporary filling, re-cementing a crown or stabilizing an injured tooth. The dentist explains what is being done and why, so you understand each step as it happens and why.
Emergency visits often stabilize the problem rather than complete all the necessary care. You may need further appointments for definitive treatment, such as completing a root canal, placing a crown or replacing a missing tooth. The dentist will outline the recommended plan and explain what may happen if parts of it are delayed for long.
Preventing repeats
Keep the follow-up appointments recommended after an emergency visit. Temporary fillings and medications are not meant to last indefinitely, and delaying permanent treatment can let problems return or worsen. If anything changes before your next visit, such as increasing pain or swelling, call the office promptly rather than waiting for the booked date to arrive.
Regular checkups can catch decay, cracks and failing restorations before they become painful. Wearing a mouthguard during sports, avoiding chewing ice or hard objects and treating grinding can lower the risk of breaks. Talk with the dentist about any habits or concerns that might make future emergencies more likely for you or your family. Prevention is usually easier than repair.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office to describe the emergency before travelling. The team can advise on urgency, first aid and the next available appropriate appointment, and tell you when emergency medical care is the better option.
Bring any broken pieces, a dislodged crown or a knocked-out tooth in milk, plus a current list of medications and allergies.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out or displaced tooth, a broken tooth with pain, or bleeding that will not stop after dental treatment are common examples. If you are unsure, call the office and describe your symptoms so the team can advise.
Same-day appointments depend on urgency and availability and cannot be guaranteed. Calling early helps. The team will discuss your options and explain when you should seek emergency medical care instead of waiting for a dental opening.
Most toothaches are best handled by a dentist. However, go to the hospital if swelling affects breathing or swallowing, spreads rapidly or is accompanied by a high fever, or if there has been a serious injury to the head or jaw.
Keep the crown safe and call the office. Avoid chewing on that side. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may hold it briefly, but the dentist should check the tooth and crown to see whether it can be re-cemented.
Often it stabilizes the situation rather than providing definitive care. Additional appointments or referral may be needed. The dentist will explain what was done and what still needs to happen to resolve the problem fully.
An urgent exam focuses on finding the cause of pain, swelling or damage. Bloomsburg patients can call our Port Dover office to ask about a prompt assessment.
