Focused on the urgent problem

An emergency exam identifies what is wrong and what needs to happen first.

An emergency dental exam is a focused appointment for a specific urgent problem, such as severe toothache, swelling, a broken tooth or an injury. The aim is to find the cause, relieve pain where possible and make a plan. Sometimes treatment can begin at the same visit; other times the problem is stabilized and further care is scheduled.

If you are in Vittoria and something has gone wrong with your teeth or mouth, call our Port Dover office first and describe your symptoms. The team will discuss how soon you can be seen based on urgency and current availability, and tell you what to bring and what to avoid while you wait.

Before calling

Clear information helps the team decide how urgently to see you.

  • Describe your symptoms

Note where the pain is, when it began, whether it is constant or comes and goes, and what makes it better or worse. Mention swelling, fever, a bad taste or a broken or loose tooth. If there was an injury, explain how it happened. These details let the team assess the urgency on the phone and prepare for your visit.

  • Health information

Have a list of current medications, allergies and medical conditions ready. Conditions such as diabetes, heart problems or a weakened immune system can affect how infection is managed. If you have already taken pain relief or antibiotics, note what and when. This information helps the dentist plan safe and appropriate care. Keep the list on your phone.

The examination

The dentist concentrates on the problem that brought you in.

Finding the source

The dentist will ask about your symptoms and examine the affected area, looking for decay, cracks, swelling, gum problems or injury. Tapping, cold tests and bite tests may help pinpoint which tooth is involved. Pain can sometimes be felt in a different tooth from the one causing it, so testing several teeth is common. Answer honestly.

Imaging and tests

X-rays are often taken to see roots, bone and areas between teeth. They can reveal infection, fractures and deep decay that are not visible during examination. The dentist will explain what the images show and how they connect to your symptoms, so you understand the diagnosis before options are presented. Ask to see the images if that helps.

Immediate options

The first priority is to manage pain and prevent things from getting worse.

Relief at the visit

Depending on what is found, the dentist may place a temporary filling, smooth a sharp edge, drain an infection, start root canal treatment or remove a tooth that cannot be saved. Not every treatment can be completed during an emergency visit. The dentist will explain what is possible today and why, so you know what to expect.

Planning further care

If more treatment is needed, the dentist will outline the options, the urgency and the expected number of visits. You should understand the reasons behind each recommendation and any alternatives, including the risks of waiting. Ask for a summary or written plan if it helps you make a decision after the appointment. Costs can be discussed too.

After the exam

Aftercare instructions help you stay comfortable until the next visit.

  1. Managing symptoms at home

Follow the instructions you receive about eating, rinsing and protecting temporary work. Ask a pharmacist or physician about safe pain relief. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed. Contact the office if pain worsens, swelling increases or you develop a fever, as these can signal that the problem needs earlier attention. Soft foods are easiest for now.

  2. Follow-up appointments

Keep any follow-up appointments, even if pain improves. Temporary repairs are not designed to last indefinitely, and an infection that has calmed down may return if the cause is not treated. If you need to reschedule, call the office promptly so the team can advise whether delaying is safe for your situation. Finishing care prevents repeat emergencies.

Emergency exam questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

What counts as a dental emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, bleeding that does not stop and signs of infection are common reasons for urgent care. When you are unsure, call and describe the symptoms so the team can advise on how quickly you should be assessed.

Will the problem be fixed at the emergency visit?

Sometimes the problem can be resolved at the first visit, but often the goal is to relieve pain and stabilize the situation, with further treatment scheduled afterward. The dentist will explain what can be done today and what follow-up is needed.

Can I walk in without calling first?

It is best to call before coming so the team can discuss your symptoms and current availability. This helps them prepare and lets you know whether an appointment can be arranged or whether another option, such as emergency medical care, is more appropriate.

Should I take antibiotics left over from before?

No. Do not take leftover or someone else’s antibiotics. They may not be appropriate for your condition and could mask symptoms. The dentist or physician will decide whether antibiotics are needed after assessing your situation.

What if the pain stops before my appointment?

Keep the appointment or call to discuss. Pain can ease when a nerve dies or an abscess drains, but the underlying problem often remains and may flare up again. Assessment helps prevent a recurrence or a more serious infection.
