An emergency dental exam is a focused assessment of a specific, urgent problem, such as severe tooth pain, a swollen gum, a cracked or broken tooth, a lost filling or crown, or an injury. The aim is to find out what is causing the problem, relieve pain where possible and explain what treatment is needed, either right away or at a follow-up visit.
If you live in Vanessa and something has gone wrong with your teeth, call our Port Dover office and describe what is happening. The team will ask questions to judge urgency and arrange an appropriate appointment. Being clear about your symptoms helps them understand how quickly you need to be seen.

When to call
Severe or throbbing pain, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out or badly broken tooth, a tooth pushed out of position, bleeding that continues after an extraction, or pain with fever all need prompt attention. Infections can spread, and injured teeth have the best chance of recovery when they are seen early. Call the office as soon as you notice these problems.
A small chip without pain, a slightly loose filling, mild sensitivity or a lost temporary crown that is not causing discomfort may not need an emergency visit, though they should still be checked soon. Call the office and describe the problem; the team can tell you whether you should come in quickly or book the next available routine appointment.
Before the visit
Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the package, if it is safe for you. Use a cold compress on the outside of your face for swelling. Avoid chewing on the painful side and stay away from very hot, cold or sweet foods. Save any broken pieces or a lost crown in a clean container and bring them along with you.
Be ready to describe when the problem started, what makes it better or worse, whether you have swelling or fever, and any recent dental work in the area. Have a list of your medications and allergies handy. If you have a medical condition, such as diabetes or a heart problem, mention it when you call, since it may affect how care is planned.
The exam
The dentist asks about your symptoms, examines the area, checks nearby teeth and gums and may tap, press or test the tooth with cold to see how it responds. X-rays are often taken to look for decay, infection, fractures or damage to roots and bone. Together these findings help pinpoint the cause, even when pain seems to spread across several teeth.
Once the cause is clear, the dentist explains what they found and the options available. Some problems can be treated during the same visit, such as placing a temporary filling or draining an abscess. Others need a separate appointment for treatment like root canal therapy or a crown. You will hear what each option involves before deciding.
After the exam
If immediate treatment is done, you will receive instructions on pain relief, eating and what to watch for. If a prescription is given, take it exactly as directed. Book any follow-up appointments promptly, especially if a temporary repair was placed, because temporary measures are not designed to last and the underlying problem still needs proper care.
Occasionally the dentist may recommend seeing a specialist, such as an oral surgeon for a complex extraction or an endodontist for a difficult root canal. They will explain why and help with the referral process. If your symptoms worsen before treatment is complete, especially with swelling or fever, call the office or seek medical care.
