Every dental service for Silver HillA focused look at an urgent problem
An emergency dental exam is a focused appointment for an urgent concern, such as severe toothache, swelling, a broken tooth, a knocked-out tooth or a lost crown. Rather than a full checkup, it concentrates on finding what is wrong, relieving discomfort where possible and deciding on the next step. Sometimes treatment begins in the same visit.
If you are in Silver Hill with a dental problem that cannot wait, call our Port Dover office and describe your symptoms. The team will ask questions to understand the urgency and discuss available appointment times. If symptoms suggest a medical emergency, you will be directed to the hospital.

When to call
Severe or throbbing pain, swelling of the gum or face, a knocked-out or displaced adult tooth, a broken tooth with pain or exposed pink tissue and bleeding that persists after a procedure generally warrant prompt contact. Infection signs such as fever or a foul taste with swelling also need timely attention.
A small painless chip, a slightly loose filling without pain or mild sensitivity that comes and goes may not need same-day care, but they should still be checked soon. Describe your symptoms honestly so the team can help prioritize, and call back if anything worsens while you wait.
Preparing to come in
Explain where the pain or problem is, when it started, what makes it better or worse and whether you have swelling, fever or difficulty opening your mouth. Mention any injury and how it happened. Share relevant health conditions and medications, especially blood thinners or recent surgeries.
Bring a list of medications, any broken pieces of tooth or a crown that has come off, and records of recent dental work if you have them. If someone else can drive, that may be helpful when you are in significant pain. Take pain relief only as directed on the label or by a pharmacist.
During the exam
The dentist examines the affected area, may gently tap or test teeth for sensitivity and checks the gums and surrounding tissues. X-rays are often taken to look for infection, fractures or decay that cannot be seen directly. These steps help pinpoint which tooth is involved and what is causing your symptoms.
Once the cause is clear, the dentist explains what they found and the options available. Some problems can be addressed during the same visit, such as placing a temporary filling, draining an abscess or smoothing a sharp edge. Others need a separate appointment for definitive treatment.
After the exam
If temporary treatment was provided, follow the dentist’s aftercare instructions carefully and avoid chewing on the affected side. Keep any follow-up appointments for permanent treatment, such as a root canal, crown or extraction. Contact the office if pain increases, swelling worsens or a temporary restoration comes loose.
Some cases, such as complex extractions or severe infections, may be referred to a specialist or hospital setting. The dentist will explain why a referral is recommended and what information will be shared. You will be given guidance on managing symptoms until you are seen.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office as soon as you notice an urgent dental problem. Describe your symptoms so the team can advise on timing and how to manage discomfort before you arrive.
Bring medications, any broken tooth pieces or a dislodged crown, and a driver if you are in significant pain or feeling unwell.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. An emergency exam focuses on a specific urgent problem rather than a full review of your mouth. A routine checkup can be scheduled separately once the urgent issue is managed.
Sometimes. The dentist may provide temporary relief or begin treatment during the visit. More involved care may need a separate appointment. The dentist will explain the plan after the examination.
The team can suggest ways to manage symptoms while you wait. If you develop severe swelling, fever, or trouble breathing or swallowing, go to emergency care immediately. Otherwise, call back if things change.
No. Leftover antibiotics may not be appropriate and could mask symptoms. Any prescription should be based on an assessment. Contact the office or a physician for advice about what is appropriate for you.
Call the office to ask about current availability for urgent concerns. The team can explain what information is needed and how the appointment would be arranged, including any forms to complete.
A throbbing tooth that keeps you up at night needs attention. Silver Hill patients can learn what helps meanwhile, when to call and how the cause is found.
