See every dental service for Boston patientsFocused on the urgent problem
An emergency dental exam is a focused appointment for a specific urgent problem, such as severe tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth or an injury. Rather than a full routine checkup, the dentist concentrates on identifying what is causing the trouble and what can be done to make you more comfortable and prevent things from getting worse.
If you are in Boston and have an urgent dental problem, call our Port Dover office and describe your symptoms. The team will ask questions to understand how urgent it is, explain what an appointment would involve and tell you if you need medical care before dental care.

When to call
Severe or persistent toothache, swelling of the gum or face, a tooth that has been knocked out or loosened, a broken tooth with sharp pain, bleeding that continues after an extraction and signs of infection such as a bad taste or pus are good reasons to call promptly. Describe the symptoms clearly so the team can judge urgency.
A small chip with no pain, a lost filling that is not causing discomfort or a crown that has come off without pain are still worth having seen, but they may not need an urgent visit. Call the office for advice. The team can tell you how to protect the tooth until an appointment is available.
Preparing
Be ready to explain when the problem started, what makes it better or worse, whether you have had a fever and what pain relief you have taken. Have a list of medications and allergies handy. If an injury is involved, note how and when it happened and bring any broken pieces of tooth with you.
Over-the-counter pain relief may help if it is safe for you; follow the label directions and check with a pharmacist if needed. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek can reduce swelling. Avoid placing heat on a swollen area or putting tablets directly on the gum, which can burn the tissue and add to the pain.
The exam
The dentist will look at the affected area, check the tooth and gums, and may tap or test the tooth for sensitivity. X-rays are often taken to see the root, bone and any infection. Together with your description, these findings help identify whether the problem is decay, a crack, an abscess or something else entirely.
Once the cause is clear, the dentist will explain the options. Sometimes treatment can begin at the same visit, such as relieving pressure, placing a temporary filling or starting root canal treatment. Other times, a follow-up appointment is planned. Ask what each option involves and what to expect next, including how you are likely to feel afterward.
Next steps
If medication is prescribed, take it exactly as directed. Follow any instructions about eating, rinsing or avoiding certain activities. Contact the office if symptoms worsen, swelling increases or you develop a fever. Temporary measures are meant to bridge you to definitive treatment, not to replace it. Ask how long a temporary repair is expected to hold.
Many emergency visits are followed by further appointments to complete treatment, such as a permanent filling, crown or root canal. Keep those appointments even if you feel better, since the underlying problem may still need attention. Regular checkups afterward help reduce the chance of future emergencies by catching decay and cracks while they are still small.

Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. An emergency exam focuses on a specific urgent problem, such as pain or swelling. A routine checkup is a broader look at your overall oral health and is usually scheduled separately once the urgent issue is settled.
Sometimes. The dentist may provide relief or start treatment at the same visit, depending on the problem and time available. In other cases, a follow-up appointment is scheduled for the full treatment, with advice on managing in between.
X-rays are often helpful to see the root, bone and any infection. The dentist will explain why they are recommended and what they are looking for in your particular case, such as infection at the root tip.
Call the office to hear any after-hours instructions. For trouble breathing or swallowing, spreading swelling, a serious injury or uncontrolled bleeding, go to the nearest emergency department or call 911 without waiting for a callback.
No. Do not take leftover antibiotics without guidance. They may be the wrong type or dose. The dentist or a physician will decide whether antibiotics are needed after assessing the problem and your health history.
