Care for Windham Centre families at our Port Dover office

Children’s dental emergencies include toothaches, broken or knocked-out teeth, injuries to the lips and gums, and swelling from infection. Kids are often busy on playgrounds, bikes and sports fields, so falls and bumps are common. Your calm response helps your child feel safer and makes it easier to gather the details the dental team will need when you call.
If your child is hurt or in pain in Windham Centre, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can advise how urgently your child should be seen and whether they need emergency medical care first, before any dental treatment is considered.

Assess the situation
After a fall or blow to the face, watch for signs of head injury such as drowsiness, vomiting, confusion or a severe headache. Check that bleeding can be controlled with gentle, steady pressure and that breathing is normal. If you have any concern about these, seek emergency medical care before focusing on the teeth. Dental injuries can be handled once your child is safe.
Reassure your child and keep them as still as possible while you look in the mouth. Note which teeth are affected, whether any are missing, loose or broken, and roughly when the injury happened. Look around for tooth fragments. Having this information ready when you phone makes your call to the dental office much more useful and quicker.
Common emergencies
Do not replant a knocked-out baby tooth, as this can harm the adult tooth developing underneath it. For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse it briefly if dirty and replant it if possible, or store it in milk and seek dental care immediately. Save any pieces of broken teeth in milk or water and bring them along.
For toothache, rinse with warm water and floss gently to remove any trapped food. Pain relief suited to your child’s age and weight may help. Never place aspirin on the gums. Swelling of the face or gums can mean infection and should be assessed promptly. Swelling that spreads, or comes with fever, needs urgent attention without waiting.
At the appointment
The dentist examines the injured area, checks the nearby teeth and may take X-rays to look for root fractures or effects on adult teeth still developing below. They will ask how and when the injury occurred. With children, the team explains each step gently and may ask you to help your child feel settled and comfortable in the chair.
Treatment might include smoothing a chipped tooth, repositioning a displaced tooth, placing a temporary filling or treating an infection. Some injured baby teeth are best monitored rather than treated straight away. The dentist will explain the options and how each one might affect your child’s adult teeth as they come in over the next few years.
Afterward
Offer soft foods and cool drinks for a few days. Help your child brush gently around the injured area to keep it clean. Use pain relief suited to their age as advised by the dentist or pharmacist. Limit rough play and contact sports until the dentist says it is safe, and consider a properly fitted mouthguard for future games.
Watch for changes such as a tooth turning grey, new swelling, a pimple on the gum or fresh pain. These may indicate nerve damage or infection and should be checked. The dentist may schedule follow-up visits to monitor healing, especially for injuries that could affect the adult teeth forming beneath the gums in younger children.
Planning your appointment
Phone our Port Dover office with details about your child’s injury or pain. The team will guide Windham Centre families on how urgent it is, what to do in the meantime and what to bring to the appointment.
Bring any knocked-out adult tooth in milk, fragments of broken teeth and a list of your child’s medications and allergies.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth forming beneath it. Control the bleeding and call the dentist for advice. Your child should still be examined to check for other injuries to the teeth, gums and jaw.
Handle it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to replant it. If that is not possible, keep it in milk and seek dental care immediately. Acting quickly improves the chances of saving the tooth in the long run.
Severe pain, facial swelling, fever or pain after an injury should be assessed promptly. Swelling that spreads or any trouble breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical care right away, before contacting the dental office for advice.
Small chips may only need smoothing, but larger breaks can expose the nerve and cause pain or infection. Call the office to describe the injury so the team can advise on how soon your child should be seen.
Use children’s pain relief according to the package directions for their age and weight, or as advised by a pharmacist or doctor. Never place aspirin on the gums or teeth, as it can burn the soft tissue.
