Caring for Wilsonville patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for WilsonvilleWhen a child’s mouth is hurt
Children bump, fall and tumble often, and their teeth can be chipped, loosened or knocked out. Toothaches and swelling from decay can also come on suddenly. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes, and when a situation needs hospital care rather than a dentist, can help you act quickly and keep your child as comfortable as possible.
If your child has a dental emergency in Wilsonville, call our Port Dover office and describe what happened, your child’s age and whether the tooth is a baby or adult tooth if you know. The team will discuss urgency and availability and give advice for the trip in.

First steps
After a fall or blow, watch for vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, severe headache or loss of consciousness, which may signal a head injury. A child who cannot close their mouth normally may have a jaw injury. These situations need emergency medical care first. Dental treatment can follow once your child is medically checked.
Comfort your child and gently rinse the mouth with water. Apply light pressure with clean gauze or cloth to bleeding areas. A cold compress on the outside of the face can reduce swelling. Collect any tooth or tooth pieces, keeping them moist in milk, and bring them with you.
Common emergencies
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, as this can damage the adult tooth underneath. If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to reinsert it or keep it in milk, then seek dental care immediately. Loose or pushed teeth should be examined promptly.
A toothache may be caused by decay, a cracked tooth or food stuck between teeth. Gently flossing may help. Swelling of the gum or face could indicate infection and should be assessed promptly. Spreading swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing needs urgent medical attention.
At the office
The dentist will examine the injured or painful area and may take X-rays to check roots, bone and developing adult teeth. Explanations are given in calm, simple language. Let the team know if your child is frightened or has special needs so they can adjust their approach.
Treatment may include smoothing or repairing a chipped tooth, repositioning a loose tooth, treating an infection or, in some cases, removing a badly damaged baby tooth. The dentist will discuss options with you and explain which treatments are appropriate for baby teeth versus adult teeth.
Afterward
Offer soft foods and help your child brush gently around the injured area. Use pain relief suitable for your child’s age and weight, following the label or your pharmacist’s advice. Keep an eye on the area and call if swelling increases, pain worsens or your child develops a fever.
Injured teeth can change colour or develop problems weeks later. Keep follow-up appointments so the dentist can monitor healing and the development of adult teeth. If your child plays sports, ask about a mouthguard to help prevent future injuries.
Planning your appointment
Once serious injuries are ruled out, phone our Port Dover office and explain what happened, your child’s age and the symptoms. The team will discuss how quickly your child should be seen.
Bring any tooth or fragments in milk, a list of your child’s medications and notes about when and how the injury occurred.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can harm the adult tooth developing underneath. Bring your child to the dentist for an examination and keep the tooth if you have it.
Act quickly. Hold the tooth by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to reinsert it or keep it in milk. Seek dental care immediately.
Discoloration after trauma can indicate bleeding inside the tooth or nerve damage. Have it examined. Some teeth recover, while others need treatment or monitoring.
Use pain relievers made for children and follow the dosing instructions based on age and weight. Ask a pharmacist if you are unsure. Avoid aspirin for children.
Go to the emergency department for head injury signs, difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or a suspected jaw fracture.
