Children fall off bikes, collide on the playground and bite down on things they should not. Toothaches can also appear suddenly, especially when decay has been developing quietly. Knowing which situations need urgent attention and which can wait a little helps you act sensibly and keep your child as comfortable and reassured as possible.
If your child has a dental emergency in Vittoria, call our Port Dover office and describe what happened, which tooth is involved and how your child is coping. The team will advise how soon to be seen based on the situation and current availability, and what you can do at home before you arrive.

Assess quickly
After a fall or blow, watch for signs of head injury such as confusion, unusual sleepiness, vomiting, headache or loss of consciousness. Check whether your child can open and close their mouth normally. A possible jaw fracture or head injury needs emergency medical care first. Once medical concerns are ruled out, turn your attention to the teeth.
Keep your child calm and seated. Rinse the mouth gently with water and press clean gauze or a cloth on bleeding gums or lips for several minutes. A cold compress on the outside of the face can ease swelling. Avoid giving hard or hot food until the area has been checked by a dentist. Stay with your child.
Baby or adult tooth?
If a baby tooth is knocked out, it is usually not put back, because doing so could damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Still, call the office so your child can be examined for other injuries. Baby teeth that are pushed in or loosened should also be assessed, as they can affect the permanent teeth below.
A knocked-out adult tooth is time-sensitive. Pick it up by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to place it back in the socket if your child is calm and able. Otherwise, store it in milk and call the office immediately. Chipped or loosened adult teeth also need prompt assessment. If unsure which type it is, ask.
Toothache and swelling
Gently floss around the sore tooth to remove trapped food and rinse with warm water. Ask a pharmacist or physician about appropriate pain relief for your child’s age and weight. Do not place aspirin or tablets on the gum. Note when the pain started and what triggers it, so you can describe the pattern clearly when you call.
Swelling of the gum or face, a pimple on the gum, fever or a bad taste can indicate infection. Call the office promptly. If swelling is spreading quickly, near the eye or under the jaw, or your child has trouble swallowing or breathing, seek emergency medical care immediately rather than waiting for a dental appointment.
Follow-up care
After an injury, a tooth may darken, become sensitive or develop an abscess weeks or months later. Keep follow-up appointments, even if your child says it feels fine. X-rays may be taken to check the root and surrounding bone. Report new pain, swelling or colour changes promptly so the dentist can reassess the tooth. Write down the date of the injury.
Mouthguards for sports, supervision on play equipment and regular checkups to catch decay early can reduce dental emergencies. Teach children not to chew on hard objects like pens or ice. If your child has had a dental emergency before, ask the dentist about any additional precautions that might suit their activities and age. Keep the office number in your phone.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as possible after a dental injury or sudden toothache, and describe what happened. The team will advise on timing based on your child’s symptoms and current availability.
Bring any knocked-out or broken tooth pieces in milk, your child’s medical information and details of when the pain or injury began.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Baby teeth are generally not replanted because this can harm the developing adult tooth. Keep the tooth if you find it and call the office so your child can be examined for any other injuries to the gums, lips or nearby teeth.
Hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and try to replace it in the socket if your child can cooperate. If not, store it in milk and call the office right away. Quick action improves the chance of saving the tooth.
Pain with swelling, fever, a bump on the gum or pain that keeps your child awake should be assessed promptly. Spreading swelling or difficulty swallowing or breathing needs emergency medical care. When unsure, call and describe the symptoms.
Yes. Even a painless chip can expose inner layers or have damaged the nerve. The dentist can check the tooth, smooth sharp edges and decide whether repair is needed. Bring any fragment you have found in milk or water.
Ask a pharmacist or physician which medication and dose are appropriate for your child’s age and weight. Do not apply tablets to the gum. Let the dental team know what was given and when, so they have accurate information at the visit.
