Caring for Villa Nova patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Villa NovaStay calm, act quickly
Children’s dental emergencies range from sudden toothaches to injuries from falls, sports or play. Baby teeth and adult teeth are handled differently, which can be confusing in the moment. Staying calm, checking for more serious injuries and calling for advice are the most useful first steps. Your child will take cues from your reaction, so a steady voice helps.
If an emergency happens in Villa Nova, call our Port Dover office to describe what has happened. The team can help you decide how quickly your child should be seen and what to do before setting out.

First moments
Look for signs of head injury, such as confusion, vomiting, unusual sleepiness or loss of consciousness. Check whether your child can breathe and swallow normally. If any of these are concerning, seek emergency medical care first. Dental treatment can follow once more serious injuries have been ruled out.
Rinse the mouth gently with water and apply light pressure with clean gauze or cloth to bleeding areas. A cold compress on the outside of the face may reduce swelling. Reassure your child and keep them still. Collect any broken teeth or fragments to bring along.
Baby or adult tooth
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, as this can damage the developing adult tooth underneath. Control bleeding and call the office for advice. The dentist will check the area and the surrounding teeth for other injuries and discuss whether monitoring is needed.
A knocked-out adult tooth is time-sensitive. Hold it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse briefly. If your child is old enough and cooperative, gently place it back in the socket and have them bite on a cloth. Otherwise, store it in milk or saliva and call immediately.
Other emergencies
A toothache in a child may come from decay, a trapped piece of food or an injury. Gently floss around the tooth to remove debris. Give pain relief only as directed for your child’s age and weight. Avoid placing aspirin or other tablets directly on the gums. Call the office to arrange an assessment.
Facial swelling, fever or a pimple on the gum can signal infection. Swelling that spreads toward the eye or neck, or makes swallowing or breathing difficult, requires emergency medical care right away. For milder swelling, call the dental office promptly so the cause can be assessed.
After the visit
Offer soft foods and encourage gentle brushing around the injured area. Follow any specific instructions given by the dentist. Monitor your child for increased pain, swelling or fever and call the office if these develop.
Injured teeth can change colour or develop problems weeks or months later. Keep follow-up appointments so the dentist can check healing and the health of developing teeth. A mouthguard for sports may help reduce the chance of future injuries.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as possible to describe the emergency. The team can advise on urgency, first aid and when your child should be seen.
Bring any knocked-out tooth or fragments in milk, along with details of medications or allergies your child has.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can harm the adult tooth developing beneath it. Control bleeding and call the dental office for guidance.
Keep it moist in milk or saliva, or try to replant it if your child can cooperate. Contact a dentist immediately, as timing matters.
Go to emergency for head injury, uncontrolled bleeding, possible jaw fracture or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Dental care can follow afterward.
Call the office to describe the injury. Even painless chips may need assessment to check for deeper damage or sharp edges.
Use only products appropriate for your child’s age and weight, following label directions or advice from your pharmacist or doctor.
