Caring for St. Williams patients at our office in Port Dover
Every dental service for St. WilliamsWhen your child is hurting
Children’s dental emergencies often happen without warning: a tumble off a bike, a collision at recess, a sudden toothache or a swollen face. Knowing what to do in the first few minutes helps you respond calmly and protect your child’s health. Baby teeth and adult teeth are handled differently, so it helps to know which kind is involved.
For families in St. Williams, the first step is to check for anything that needs emergency medical care, then call our Port Dover office. The team will ask what happened, help you judge urgency and advise you on first aid while arrangements are discussed.

First response
Look for signs of a head injury, such as confusion, drowsiness, vomiting or loss of consciousness. Check breathing and whether bleeding is controlled with gentle pressure. If any of these are concerning, seek emergency medical care immediately. Dental treatment can follow once your child is stable.
Comfort your child and help them rinse gently with water. Press clean gauze or a cloth on bleeding areas. A cold compress on the cheek can reduce swelling. Look for broken tooth pieces and keep them moist. Note the time of the injury, as it can matter for treatment decisions.
Baby or adult tooth
If a baby tooth is knocked out, do not try to put it back, as this can damage the developing adult tooth underneath. Call the office for advice. Pushed-in or loosened baby teeth also need assessment, since injuries can affect the permanent tooth forming below the gum.
A knocked-out permanent tooth should be handled by the crown, rinsed briefly if dirty and, if possible, placed back in the socket or kept in milk. Time is critical, so seek dental care immediately. Chipped, cracked or displaced permanent teeth also need prompt attention to protect the nerve.
Pain and swelling
A toothache may result from decay, food trapped between teeth or a cracked tooth. Rinse with warm water and gently floss to remove debris. Use children’s pain relief only as directed for their age and weight. Avoid placing pain medicine directly on the gums. Call the office to arrange assessment.
Swelling of the face or gums, fever, or a pimple-like bump on the gum may signal infection. Spreading swelling, especially near the eye or under the jaw, or any trouble swallowing or breathing needs emergency medical care. Localized gum swelling should still be seen promptly by a dentist.
After the visit
Injured teeth can darken, become sensitive or develop infection weeks or months later. The dentist may schedule follow-up visits. Watch for colour changes, swelling or a bump on the gum and report them. Baby tooth injuries may also affect the permanent tooth, which will be checked as it comes in.
Mouthguards for sports, helmets for biking and supervision during active play reduce the risk of dental injuries. Teach children not to chew on hard objects. Regular checkups help find and treat decay before it becomes a painful emergency.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office as soon as possible. Explain what happened, your child’s age and symptoms, and whether the injured tooth is a baby or adult tooth.
Bring any tooth fragments in milk, your child’s health information and a note of any pain relief already given and when.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can harm the developing adult tooth. Keep your child comfortable, control bleeding and call the dental office for advice on next steps.
Call the office anyway. Even small chips can expose deeper layers or leave sharp edges. The team will advise on how soon your child should be seen.
Go to emergency for head injuries, trouble breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly spreading facial swelling. For tooth-only injuries, call the dental office promptly.
You may use children’s pain relief as directed on the package for their age and weight, unless advised otherwise by their doctor. Do not rub medication on the gums.
It can. The developing adult tooth sits close to the baby tooth roots. The dentist may monitor the area and check the permanent tooth as it erupts.
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance when it is handled gently and seen quickly. St. Williams residents can call our Port Dover office for immediate guidance.
A fall, a sports collision or a slip on the trail can injure teeth and gums. St. Williams residents can call our Port Dover office for guidance after dental trauma.
