Caring for Renton patients at our Port Dover office
See every dental service for RentonWhen something happens to a child’s tooth
Children bump their mouths on playground equipment, trip on stairs, collide during games and sometimes wake with a painful tooth. Most dental emergencies in children are not life-threatening, but they can be upsetting for both the child and the parent. Knowing what counts as urgent and what can wait until morning makes it easier to respond sensibly.
If your child is hurt or in pain, call our Port Dover office and describe what happened. Families in Renton can get advice by phone on immediate steps and whether the child should be seen soon. When the injury involves the head, breathing or heavy bleeding, seek emergency medical care first and contact the dental team afterward.

First steps
Comfort your child and look for signs of a more serious injury, such as confusion, drowsiness, vomiting or trouble breathing. Rinse the mouth gently with water and press clean gauze or cloth against any bleeding for several minutes. A cold compress wrapped in a cloth can be held against the cheek or lip to reduce swelling and discomfort while you work out the next step.
Look for any tooth or tooth fragments and keep them moist in milk. Note which teeth seem affected and whether they are baby or adult teeth, if you know. Take a photo if it helps you describe the injury. Then call the office. Bringing these details helps the team give accurate advice and prepare for the visit if one is needed.
Baby or adult tooth
A knocked-out baby tooth should not be put back in the socket, because replanting can damage the adult tooth developing beneath it. Loosened or pushed-in baby teeth still need to be checked, since injuries can affect the developing permanent tooth or the nerve. Watch for later darkening of the tooth or swelling of the gum and mention these at follow-up.
A knocked-out permanent tooth is time-sensitive. Pick it up by the crown, avoid touching or scrubbing the root and, if your child is old enough and cooperative, try gently placing it back in the socket. Otherwise keep it in milk and call immediately. Broken or loosened adult teeth also benefit from prompt assessment to protect the nerve and root.
Pain and swelling
A toothache in a child can come from a cavity, food trapped between teeth, an erupting tooth or an infection. Gently floss around the area to remove anything caught, rinse with warm water and give an age-appropriate pain reliever according to package directions or pharmacist advice. Never place aspirin on the gums. Call the office if pain persists or keeps your child awake.
Swelling of the gum or face, especially with fever, may indicate a dental infection that needs prompt attention. If swelling spreads quickly, affects the eye or neck or your child has difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to the emergency department immediately. For milder swelling, call the dental office the same day so the team can advise on urgency.
Follow-up care
After treatment, follow instructions about soft foods, brushing gently around the injured area and pain relief. Keep your child away from rough play for a few days if advised. Offer reassurance and praise; children often feel anxious after a dental injury, and a calm approach helps them feel safe returning to the dentist for follow-up visits.
Some injuries affect the nerve or root, and signs may not appear immediately. A tooth may change colour, become sensitive or develop a gum bump. Follow-up appointments let the dentist check healing and take X-rays if needed. Booking these ahead can help Renton families keep track of monitoring alongside school and activities without missing visits.
Planning your appointment
Phone 519-583-2929 as soon as you can after your child’s injury or sudden pain. Our Port Dover team will ask what happened and advise on first steps, urgency and appointment availability for your child.
Bring any recovered tooth or fragments in milk, a list of your child’s medications and allergies, and a comfort item to help them stay settled.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Keep your child calm, control any bleeding with gentle pressure and call the dental office for advice on whether and when your child should be seen.
Keep the tooth moist in milk and call the office right away. The team can help you work it out based on your child’s age and which tooth was lost. If in doubt, treat it as urgent until you have spoken with someone.
Go to the emergency department or call 911 for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly spreading facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding or any sign of a head injury such as confusion or vomiting. Dental care can follow once those are managed.
A painless chip is often less urgent, but it should still be checked soon, as the inner tooth may be closer to the surface than it looks. Call the office to describe it and arrange an appropriate appointment time.
Use mouthguards for sports, supervise young children on stairs and play equipment, use proper car seats and discourage chewing on hard objects. Regular checkups also help catch cavities before they become painful emergencies for your child.
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance when handled gently and seen fast. Renton residents can learn what to do in the first minutes and when to call us.
