Calm steps for urgent moments

Knowing what to do first helps you stay steady when your child is hurt.

Children’s dental emergencies often happen suddenly: a fall from a bike, a collision on the playground or a toothache that starts at bedtime. The right response depends on whether the tooth is a baby or adult tooth, what kind of injury or symptom is involved and how your child is feeling overall. Staying calm helps your child stay calm too.

If your child in Pine Grove has a dental emergency, call our Port Dover office to describe what happened. The team can help you judge urgency and arrange care, and will tell you if a hospital assessment is needed first.

Assess the situation

Check your child’s overall safety before the teeth.

  • Signs of a medical emergency

Look for signs of head injury such as confusion, drowsiness, vomiting or a headache that gets worse. Check for trouble breathing or swallowing and for bleeding that does not slow with firm pressure. Facial swelling that spreads rapidly or comes with fever is also serious. These need emergency medical care before a dental visit.

  • Dental concerns to note

Once your child is safe, note which tooth is affected, whether it is broken, loose, pushed out of place or missing, and whether there is pain or swelling. Collect any tooth pieces. Knowing whether the tooth is a baby or adult tooth helps, but if unsure, describe your child’s age and the tooth’s position.

Common emergencies

Quick steps for the most frequent problems.

Knocked-out and broken teeth

For a knocked-out adult tooth, hold it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and keep it in milk or your child’s saliva. Call a dentist immediately. Do not replant a baby tooth. For broken teeth, rinse the mouth, apply a cold compress to the face and bring any fragments with you.

Toothache and swelling

Rinse with warm water, gently floss to remove trapped food and offer appropriate children’s pain relief following package directions. Do not place pain tablets on the gum. Swelling, fever or a bump on the gum may mean infection and needs prompt dental attention. Rapidly spreading swelling needs emergency care.

At the appointment

The dentist will assess the injury and comfort your child.

  1. What the dentist will do

The dentist will examine the area, often take X-rays and explain the findings in simple terms. Treatment may include smoothing or bonding a chipped tooth, repositioning and splinting a displaced adult tooth, or managing infection. For baby teeth, the approach often focuses on comfort and protecting the adult tooth underneath.

  2. Helping your child cope

Stay close, speak calmly and let the dentist lead explanations. Children often sense a parent’s worry, so steady reassurance helps. Bring a comfort item if your child has one. If your child is too distressed for treatment, the dentist may provide interim care and discuss further options.

After the emergency

Injured teeth may need watching for weeks or months.

Home care while healing

Offer soft foods and avoid chewing on the injured area. Keep the mouth clean with gentle brushing. Follow any instructions about pain relief, rinsing or splint care. If stitches were placed, ask when they will dissolve or need removal. Discourage sucking on fingers or pacifiers near an injured tooth where possible.

Watching for later changes

Call the office if the tooth darkens, becomes painful, loosens again or a bump appears on the gum. These may signal nerve damage or infection. Keep follow-up appointments, even if your child seems fine. A mouthguard for sports can lower the risk of future injuries.

Children’s emergency questions

Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.

Should I put a knocked-out baby tooth back in?

No. Replanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing underneath. Control bleeding with gentle pressure and call the dentist for advice. For a permanent tooth, keep it moist and seek dental care immediately.

When is a child’s toothache an emergency?

Severe pain, swelling, fever or a bump on the gum suggests infection and needs prompt attention. Swelling that spreads or affects breathing or swallowing requires emergency medical care right away, not a dental appointment.

What pain relief can I give my child?

Use children’s pain relief appropriate for their age and weight, following package directions or advice from your pharmacist or doctor. Never place a tablet directly on the gum, as it can burn the tissue.

My child bit through their lip. What should I do?

Apply firm pressure with clean gauze and a cold compress. Most lip cuts stop bleeding within minutes. If bleeding continues, the cut is deep or gaping, or you are worried, seek medical care for assessment.

Will my child’s injured baby tooth affect the adult tooth?

It can, because adult teeth develop close to baby tooth roots. The dentist will monitor both at follow-up visits. Most injuries heal without lasting effects, but checking over time helps catch any changes early.
