Caring for Lynedoch patients at our Port Dover office
Every dental service for Lynedoch patientsWhen kids get hurt
Children are active, curious and sometimes clumsy, so dental accidents are common. A fall from a bike, a collision during a game or a tumble on the stairs can chip, loosen or knock out a tooth. Toothaches and facial swelling can also arise suddenly. Acting calmly and quickly helps protect the injured area and reassures your child.
If your child is hurt or in pain in Lynedoch, call our Port Dover office once any medical emergency has been addressed. Describe what happened and whether the tooth is a baby or permanent tooth. The team will discuss urgency and availability, and explain how to care for your child before you set out.

First response
After a fall or blow, check whether your child is alert, responding normally and able to breathe and swallow comfortably. Signs of a head injury, such as vomiting, confusion or drowsiness, need emergency medical care. Comfort your child and keep them as calm and still as possible.
Rinse the mouth gently with water and press clean gauze on any bleeding area. A cold compress may help reduce swelling. Look for the tooth or fragments. Handle a knocked-out permanent tooth by the crown, not the root, and keep it moist in milk or the child’s own saliva.
Baby or adult tooth
A knocked-out baby tooth is usually not put back, because doing so could harm the developing adult tooth underneath. Still call the office so the injury can be assessed. Baby teeth that are pushed in, loosened or chipped may need monitoring or treatment, and the dentist will explain the options.
A knocked-out permanent tooth is time-sensitive. If possible and the child is cooperative, gently place it back in the socket after a brief rinse, or keep it in milk. Call right away. Broken, loose or displaced permanent teeth also need prompt assessment to give them the best chance.
Toothache and swelling
Ask your child where it hurts and look for food stuck between teeth, a visible hole or a swollen gum. Rinse with warm water and floss gently. Children’s pain relief can be given as directed for their age and weight. Avoid placing medication directly on the gum, and call to arrange an assessment.
Facial swelling, fever, a swollen eye, difficulty opening the mouth or trouble swallowing may mean infection is spreading. These symptoms require urgent medical attention. Do not wait for a dental appointment. Seek emergency care first, then follow up with the dental office for treatment of the source.
After the emergency
Injured teeth may change colour, become sensitive or develop infection weeks or months later. Follow the dentist’s recommended follow-up schedule even if your child seems fine. Watch for darkening, a gum bump or new pain, and call if you notice any of these changes between appointments.
Mouthguards for sports, safety gates for toddlers and helmets for bikes and scooters can reduce the risk of dental injuries. Childproofing furniture edges and supervising active play also help. Ask the dentist whether a custom mouthguard is suitable for your child’s activities.
Planning your appointment
Call our Port Dover office to describe your child’s injury or pain and ask how soon they should be seen. Bring any tooth or fragment kept moist in milk.
Bring your child’s health information and note what pain relief has been given and at what time.
Before you book
Have a question about your situation? Our team can help you plan a visit.
No. Reimplanting a baby tooth can damage the adult tooth developing beneath it. Keep your child comfortable and call the dental office for guidance and an assessment.
Handle it by the crown, rinse briefly if dirty and place it back in the socket if possible, or keep it in milk. Call immediately, as timing is important for the best outcome.
Severe pain, facial swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing need urgent attention. Swelling that affects breathing requires emergency medical care. Call the office for other toothaches to arrange assessment.
Save any fragment, rinse the mouth and call to arrange an assessment. Even painless chips can affect the inner tooth, and the dentist will advise how soon your child should be seen.
Sometimes. Injuries to baby teeth can affect the developing permanent tooth. The dentist will monitor the area and explain any signs to watch for as your child grows.
Protect the root surface and keep the tooth moist in the first moments. Lynedoch patients can see what to do next and when to phone our Port Dover office.
